Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Amendment 26:
Be it the will of The American People, as dictated by The Congress Committee of Republican Affairs, the President of The United States shall henceforth be granted the right to run for subsequent terms after his initial two
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youIt wouldn't surprise me. Or, just as likely, after he's had his two-term bite at the apple the mantle gets passed on to Ivanka, Eric, Jared...some other member of the Trump dynasty.
Or just an unrelated but equally awful candidate who the Republicans and Russia think they could use. Point is, they will try to do away with free and fair elections, and right now they're succeeding.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."That's more likely to read "the presidential term is extended to a lifetime appointment with elections only held when the president in office dies."
Unnecessary when you can just rig each election. The former sounds less outrageous and is less likely to backfire. I mean, Russia still has elections - it's just that Putin will win every time and everybody knows it.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."So how many executive orders did Trump pass so far?
Point taken. So, how do we resist this Muslim ban?

It's been two days
Say to the others who did not follow through You're still our brothers, and we will fight for youI don't even know. I guess it depends on how he tries to implement it.
If it has to go through Congress, we get on the phones and start blowing up our representative's landlines. But as we've seen by now, that's hardly a guaranteed success.
The ACLU will probably try to sue to stop it, but I'm not confident in their ability to stop Trump's legal juggernauts.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Two days and already he made 4 executive orders? Despite having a friendly Congress?
At this rate, he'll surpass Obama's total in like.... June.

I take it back, it'll probably be five executive orders once Trump gives the go-ahead for the Dakota pipeline, which is expected this morning.
Because fuck the people who live there, right?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, but he does that and he's gonna have a riot on his hands.
Anyone with a conscience: Don't build that pipeline!
Trump: Fuck you, I'm evil!
Part of it is probably that it appeals to his ego. Going through Congress must be such a drag for him, because it means people have the chance to either stop or sign off on his crap. But just executive ordering stuff lets him flex his new muscles and feel powerful.
More than a dozen states are working to pass new voter suppression laws. Trump's repeated lies about "millions of illegals voting" will give them just the political cover they need.
Help us, Tom Perez. You're our only hope.
@Kkhohoho: That won't matter, and it won't discourage him or the GOP in the slightest. Hell, it might actually delight Trump, because it'll give him an excuse to play dictator and dispatch all the tanks and troops he wants.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Soon, the only "voter ID" accepted will be a Republican party membership card.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Yep.
And even then, they'll probably restrict it to white Republicans, just to hedge their bets.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."and : And the only non-GOP candidate on the ballots will be "a bullet to your brain, delivered immediately".

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.10th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge, Neils Gorsuch, is top contender for Supreme Court Seat. At 49 Years Old, Neils Gorsuch has been compared to Antonin Scalia, and on a Ranking of Justices, he was Number 2 in "Most Scalia-ness".
At least he won't be a Trump Kiss-Ass if that's the case (hopefully).
... Has the Godzilla Threshold been reached yet?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. From what I've heard, not yet. Now if RBG dies...
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."At least it will be more of the same for the moment, and hopefully the other justices can hold out the next four years, three if we're going to play dirty with the next nomination.
Although, Scalia is part of the reason we're in this mess in the first place (the VRA decision).
I think RBG has said before that the only reason she hasn't died/retired yet is that her replacement would never have gotten approved. If she's a stubborn as most of the old ladies I know (probably), she might just manage to hold out out of spite.

I was talking in general, not specifically about the Supreme Court pick. The last few pieces of news on this page and the previous one have revealed to me new depths in the barrel of horror and despair that I haven't imagined I'd see so soon.
... Who's RBG, anyway?

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She's one of the more liberal Justices on the Supreme Court, and a tough old bird.
Trump's ragequit would come in the form of ordering the military out in force to put down the protesters like rabid dogs and getting executed for treason by the Secret Service. The man's not going to give up.
