Managed to read a bit more of this over the past few days. Wow Young, really? "I'm so bored with this place I'm gonna run off for three months, byeeeeeee!"

Though at least Honor's making the best of it and challenging her crew. And I also enjoyed how her chief engineer started to hate that she was putting all this pressure on her...then immediately calmed down after realizing that the crew had done the exact same thing to Honor after the exercises.

[up]Believe me, that's not even the beginning of the depth of Scummery that is Lord Pavel Young.

[up][up] Not so much "bored with this place" as wanting to screw Honor over, dumping the load on her in expectations that she'll fail and he'll be able to use it as fodder for getting her dismissed from the service.

Later books show how much of a vindictive, petty little shitbag he really is, with his achievements almost entirely based on Screw the Rules, I Have Connections! thanks to his family.

My God, Pavel Young. Probably the biggest Hate Sink in the franchise, and a complete failure of an officer that I guarantee only got his rank through his father's political power. The other one that comes to mind is... Santino? The base commander who was caught completely unprepared and flat-footed by the Peeps and botched his response, then put all the blame on his tac officer.

I already don’t like him, and the fact that Honor beat the shit out of him when he tried to rape her makes it even better.

I’m also very glad that the Admiralty is sharing my feelings on how dumb this whole plot is, that Honor’s being swept under the rug to save face on the Admiral that put her on that in the first place.

Yeah, Santino was the one, during Operation Thunderbolt in War of Honor.

I don't think he's really that much of a Hate Sink, though, because aside from that and the short story "Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington" (IIRC on the title) where he nearly got his own ship blown up because of his stupidity, he didn't get air time. Young figures in multiple books, and as a significant antagonist in all but OBS.

[up]Probably just me then. I really hate incompetent leader figures who deny their own incompetence and blame it on others. Which make up a fair few minor characters in this series.

Given that he got a few thousand people killed with a maneuver that has good claim on 'Most Boneheaded Action (Manticore Side)' of the First Havenite War and took the time for that to give a Woman who dared to speak truth to him an albatross among her neck.

Yeah, Hate Sink fits, no redeemable qualities.

atm I'm audible-ing Short Victorious War (in the evening bathtub) and I wonder...whatever happened to Sir Yancey Parks?

It's been a while since my last read of the earlier parts of the series, but I don't think he was mentioned again after SVW. A web search to see if I was remembering correctly (always a chancy proposition tongue ) didn't bring up anything after his actions in SVW.

My opinion is that they kept him on at Hancock, as he was holding down the fort fine (at least after Yorik), and after the story focus moved away from there he was no longer relevant to the story so he never came up again. Or, in short: Offscreen Inertia. grin
