(I saw Allan mention the lack of one so I thought I'd make one.)

Recent political stuff:

  • The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
  • Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
  • The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

Speaking of Germany, can't y'all just, like, import some new Saxe-Coburg-Gothas to replace the current circus and start the monarchy from a clean slate?

Fun fact: Franz Herzog von Bayern, the head of the former royal family of Bavaria, is also the current head of the House of Stuart, who ruled England, Scotland and Irelandnote  before the Glorious Revolution of 1688 overthrew James II and VII, making him the theoretical Jacobite claimant to the British throne.

German nobles are hardly anything to be proud of.

One of them managed to become one of the Af D's most prominent politicians (which in a way is a good thing, since her stupidity is giving a bad impression of the party) and the current Hohenzollern family is a complete horror show.

Honestly, if you're at the point where you're actually considering replacing your German dynasty with another German dynasty, you might as well just get rid of the whole thing. tongue

Isn't that because Wales (as far as noble titles were concerned) was rolled into England, while both Scotland and Ireland were treated as separate titles?

Wales was legally made part of England back in 1535-1542, it didn’t legally become a distinct entity in British law until 1881 when parliament put in place a law requiring Welsh pubs be closed on a Sunday. The Secretary of State for Wales (and their department) wasn’t a thing until 1965 and it wasn’t until 1998 that the Welsh Assembly became a legal entity, and 2006 when the Assembly could put together actual devolved governments.

Wait, they were? Yeah, that seems a bit harsh.

Though it is possible that that is only a formal cutting of ties.

No, that was before they outright left.

The royal household even refused to put her on the royal payroll, something their personnel department also used as an excuse to not help her when she was feeling down due to all the crap being thrown her way.

It was not just a "bit" harsh. It was an outright toxic and abusive environment that was actually driving Meghan to suicidal thoughts.

It didn't help that someone in that household - possibly a member of the royal family itself - questioned how dark Harry and Meghan's son Archie's skin would be when she was pregnant with him.

There's a reason this topic ended up being brought up in the Racism thread too.

Is it true that Archie did not get a prince title because of his skin colour? I always thought that only children of the monarch and those of the heir get the title and thus Archie had no claim to it. Or did they twist the rules to deny him the title?

They denied him any title and refused to provide security for him.

They used Rules As Written, but without the title he has no right to personal protection and such.

Because obviously there wouldn't be tons of loonies going after the sole Po C Royal.

Note that his cousins got a title despite the rules only says Child and Grandchild of the Monarch, not great Grandchild. So they were okay with a Rule Bending here.

Of course the monarchist defenders are quick to point out that there's a differences between direct line of succession and the side lines but...

See above, the title isn't a shiny bauble, it's a key to some thing he would def need growing up in that environment

A full explanation can be found at Heraldica.org, here and here.

For those who don't fancy the Wall of Text, the title of Prince(ess) is given to:

  • The children of a monarch
  • The children of the sons of a monarchnote
  • The children of the eldest son of a Prince of Wales

Archie does not fit any of those categories, though he would fit the second one upon Charles's accessionnote . Under the normal tradition he would be styled Earl of Dumbarton, his father's second titlenote  but his parents decided that he would just be called "Master Archie" instead.

It is important to note that it is not the norm for a monarch to live and reign anywhere near as long as Elizabeth II has done. Prince Charles is only the second British heir apparent to become a grandfather before ascending to the throne, after Prince Albert Edward (later Edward VII) in 1891note . His grandchildren did not reach adulthood until long after Victoria had died, so there isn't much of a precedent for their role or their status within the family. In particular Archie is the first ever child of a younger son of a Prince of Walesnote  and his parents'... atypical behaviour makes him an unreliable indicator for future practice.

They may want to update the rules then, since a growing life expectancy will make such scenarios more and more likely.

I bet you five bucks that they would have adjusted that if Archie had been more...monochromatic.

Also that’s the title of Prince/Princess, the Queen has pretty board authority to hand out titles, haven’t titles often been used as birthday presents?
