(I saw Allan mention the lack of one so I thought I'd make one.)

Recent political stuff:

  • The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
  • Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
  • The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

The Graun's clique of women's issues writers are somewhat notorious for their transphobia and willingness to give transphobes a voice. Bunch of second-wave feminists who've steadfastly refused to move with the times. This is pretty standard behaviour in that paper's opinion section.

What's precedent ever done for us?

The Natural History Museum has come under criticism for hosting the Saudi leadership. They have released a statement explaining themselves:

In short, no museum staff are attending, they booked the meeting two months ago so that the Saudi embassy could celebrate Saudi Arabia Day, hosting such meetings is an important source of external funding, and they don't regard providing hosting space is an endorsement of what the attendees may represent.

Do we start with how rape shouldn't be considered a violent crime and shouldn't always result in a prison sentence?

I remember hearing about this. Yeah, Greer's a terrible person.

Given that there's been reports of strides being made at the Negotiations, I wonder if that's related or just usual Tory shenanigans.

Although I'd like for there to be at least some agreement I can niggle about, I'm all prepared for these talks to collapse like a rushed chocolate soufflé.

I would them rather to have a basic agreement.

[up][up] I think those reports are very overstated. The EU is basically saying the same it said month ago regarding the state of negotiations.

Greer is a rape apologist?

WHY?

HOW?

That's it. Fuck her forever.

As if it wasn't bad enough she's a TERF.

That's what I get for not doing my research.

EDIT: I get that Jo Brand feels strongly about Greer. I get that. But the shit she's said has made her not a good person. She has lived long enough to become the villain and we can't really tolerate intolerance even from our heroes.

I've had to give up some idols already. It wasn't nice.

Ok sorry for interrupting this but I want to learn something: how bad was Thatcher to england in general? is just that I study political science and I know a couple of friends who like her a lot for recovering the economy(or so they said) while other page said is a bunch of bullshit.

Not sure if anyone else is following the live ticker of the Guardian but...well...it looks like the Talks just fell through. Nobody is wording it this way, naturally, but it really, really doesn't look good.

[up] The Brexit negotiations are now in the end phase...there needs to be some sort of agreement by the end of the week, so the EU negotiation team was working over the weekend with the Brits to figure out the 10% left for a withdraw agreement (to be clear, not a trade deal, just an orderly withdraw). Things apparently were actually going somewhere...then Dominic Raab arrived.

Frankly, I think if not for the Irish Question, the EU would have walked away from this mess of a negotiation weeks ago. You just can't trust the UK government in anything. Their newest turn is to claim that they didn't understand that when they signed up for the backstop that there would be no limit to the backstop. Which is just...a backstop with a time limit is no longer a backstop per definition.

Even if they make a deal this week, it would still need to pass the UK Parliament and the proper EU Gremiums. Especially the former might not be easy.

[up] Sure, but it sounds like the EU is now really losing its patience. I think we will see a huge clash on Wednesday.

Thatcher did help to recover the economy. The problem is how she did it.

She destroyed industries (ship building, steel, coal, etc.) and replaced it with nothing (no work, retraining, etc.). She broke the unions, local businesses folded, local economies crashed, and people were left unemployed and destitute. Thirty years later, and these regions (and people) of Wales and the north of England still haven't recovered. This is why they're classified by the EU as among the poorest regions of the EU and eligible to receive development funds. She also deregulated everything, privatising the railway and the utilities, and started the process of unbalancing the UK economy towards services.

This is why, when she died in 2013, there were those awful celebrations around the country, which led to the government giving her state funeral police protection just in case it was attacked. The anger with Thatcher is understandable, but those celebrations were appalling and cannot be condoned. Fortunately, there was no trouble during her funeral.

Back in 2013 I was having my hair cut in a Norwich Barber - I studied at UEA hastag humble brag - and I overheard a couple men bemoaning how Thatcher was being treated in death, with one calling her "a legend".

Of course, one of my philosophy professors who was and may still also may be a member of the Green Party, had nothing but bad things to say about her, saying she helped no one while mourning the death of one of his colleagues who did help people.

Thatcherism sucks and I hope by the end of life - which I hope is eternal - to be rid of it, which won't be easy.

Also I don't like what happened to Cadbury's.

[up][up] Correction: Thatcher didn't privatise the railways in particular. That was on Major.
