It's more than Amy was so underfocused than her personality became forgettable, and people just remember her being this one-note gag with NPC energy.
Which is kind of a shame, I enjoyed her personality in Riders. Her 06 personality is not so bad, but the dialogue is atrocious.
Did I ever tell you guys I loathe a piece of dialogue from Dragon Ball? It's Gohan's "I'm my father's son!", a line that is meant to be a Badass Boast, but it fails to me because it sounds redundant out of context. Amy's line of "If I have to choose the world or Sonic, I would choose Sonic" is awful. I know what she meant, but it's still a horrible line.

My real issue with that era of Amy is that Team Sonic didn't seem to like her.
I find Amy is a way better character if Sonic and the lot actually value her as a friend. I'm fine with Amy having a one way crush, provided it doesn't make a genuine friendship impossible.
I also can't stand that for a time Sonic was consistently written as not liking Knuckles.
I like conflict between characters but I prefer it to be something they work through, rather than an issue that can't progress anywhere.
I fine with Sonic being thoughtless and bemoaning how seriously some of his friends deal with things, but I feel like he should still respect them and like spending time with them.

Yeah, that. I love me some Sonic X, but my lord, Amy was insufferable. She did have her moments, but they were buried underneath all the obnoxiousness. I don't know if I would say it's my least favorite interpretation of her, but it's definitely up there. I'm so glad we have been done with Amy's obsessive personality since Lost World.

I want to think Knuckles was forced into the narrative, because he was popular, and the writers didn't know what to do with him. Same with Amy.
Luckily Sega seemed to get a grip and allow him to just not appear in Unleashed and Rush Adventure. But even then, there were plans for Knuckles and Shadow to appear in Unleashed, so...bullet dodged.
I think the reception towards Knuckles in Frontiers was universally positive. I did hear people disliking Amy in Frontiers (understandable, the somber attitude was very weird for her), Eggman (he was not the main villain) and Tails (some big names Tails stans saying Frontiers even giving attention to Forces was bad for the IP, however that works). Knuckles? I have heard nothing but good things in the game and the animation.

Knuckles is excellent in Frontiers. I really love his and Sonic's friendship in it. They both know they rub the other one the wrong way, but they kind of enjoy it at this point so it's got a degree of self awareness and friendly teasing about it.

I never really saw the Adventure era as Team Sonic disliking Amy. Tails got along with her pretty well, Knuckles was just pretty removed as always, and Sonic just wanted his space.

Honestly, I kind of liked how uncomfortable Amy made Sonic before. Here you have a character who is almost always in control and on top of things no matter who he faces, yet can't handle the affection of a little girl. It writes itself.
Same with Sonic and Knuckles really; the latter is constantly screwing up and making things harder for the former, and he's just ten types of done.
I understand that's not something suitable for the long term without grating people after a while (as we currently see with Shadow) but I'm not really overly fond of that everyone just gets along with each other with no real conflict either.

That said, I don't think it's appropriate for Sonic to be taking credit for other people's work. He did not stack colored beans. That was the work of the noble Has Bean, hero of Beanville, who fought to save his fellow Beans from being Roboticized by the sinister Dr. Robotnik (not Eggman; The game was never released in Japan).

But the ones about the most recent two games made me chuckle react in an appropriate echidna manner.
Huh, one of the comments thought they were talking about the train in Triple Trouble. Now that I think about it, if I had a nickel for every time Sonic fought on or against a train, I'd have at least three nickels. Which isn't a lot, but...

Knuckles and Sonic being "close friends" would be way better to me conceptually...if it happened IN Sonic Frontiers.
There's not much interesting about them together if they aren't poking at each other due to their opposing personalities.
And it made sense...they don't hang out, they were acquaintances at best before Sonic Heroes came along.

Thing I'm looking forward most about the third Sonic Film is that they are (likely) skipping straight to Sonic Knuckles and Tails being a close knit of friends.
Gosh I hope movie 3 introduces Amy. If you're going to introduce one new hedgehog why not more. Get into the Hedgehog tribe and what Sonic's birth heritage is.

The thing about Sonic & Knuckles is that they kind of just went from uneasy allies to bffs overnight. There wasn't really much of a "Enemies to Friends" arc that happened, so much as they just stopped being pissy towards each other.
Which isn't really a problem tbh, but then its really awkward when they can't decide on if they're begrudging allies or bffs. You could just go with the copout answer that "they're both" but eeehhhh.
The movies at least settled on one side it seems.

Bit of a coin toss whether to put this in the comic thread or this one (the comic thread is IDW, this is from Archie), but Game Apologists takes a look at the history of...a reformed Metal Sonic, Shard.
So then the aforementioned complaint about Amy has pretty much always only applied to the bare minimum of time in each game before it's moved on from.
Seems like people are blowing one game (Battle) and a couple other moments way out of proportion.
