Comparing either game's tone to Colors is dumb...
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.I'm going to disagree with comparing Colors to Black Knight and Unleashed.
But I plan to make disagreeing with any sort of positivity toward Sonic Colors into a family creed, so...

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!It's not that Colo(u)rs is light-hearted, it's that it's infantile in tone and lacking in any real narrative qualities of any kind.
I do writing, feel free to check out my stories here! https://numbugwritingblog.tumblr.com/post/686233243868102656/numbugs-shared-heroic-uniBALDY MCNOSEHAIR
ughhh.
I mean, it's not like Sonic is good coming up with insults
"Hey look, it's a giant talking egg!"
Also I know this was last page but...STC ONLINE! Shadow wasn't a robot, he was created just like his Sega counterpart, though instead it was by a race of aliens (that couldn't finish it and eventually was found with Kintobor who couldn't finish him either) then he was found by an evil organization (compromised of new and old villains) who completed him using Sonic's dna
¡PONLE QUE DIGA!:"¡HUMONGOSAURIO HASTA LA MUERTE!"Oh no...lame insults.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.He probably figured he was safe as long as Shadow never saw the mural and starting getting ideas. Besides the mural was just an inspiration, he wasn't actually trying to bring everything he saw in it to reality.
Colors had some great music and Act 1 of any given zone is usually really fun to play, at the very least. It also has Sonic outrun a black hole for about thirty seconds which is possibly his greatest feat in any of the games.

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book! The DS version also has Omega detecting that he's about to exceed to speed of light and Sonic responds to "Speed of light is for babies"
¡PONLE QUE DIGA!:"¡HUMONGOSAURIO HASTA LA MUERTE!"Remember when people thought Sonic Colors was funny?
That depends of who you ask, there's people who still find it funny
¡PONLE QUE DIGA!:"¡HUMONGOSAURIO HASTA LA MUERTE!"I still find it funny.
It has its moments. The Eggman intercom stuff is great.

This song needs more love.Sonic Colors...is humor.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.I too still find it funny
It also has some cute moments
¡PONLE QUE DIGA!:"¡HUMONGOSAURIO HASTA LA MUERTE!"I remember people praising Colors to hell and back because it was low on plot and high on fun. Now it's hated just for that reason.
Sonic needs to find a sweet spot between serious and fun in order to ease complaints.
Edit:
Amy needs a new theme. She seriously only has "My Sweet Passion" from 20 years ago? It's a good theme but she has so few songs for a major character.

The Sonic fanbase will never be placated. Heck, Forces seemed like an attempt to please absolutely everyone and it was a disaster.
I really wish Amy got a new theme cause I certainly don't like my sweet passion and follow me is ok but does it really count for Amy? It's shared by...Sonic Heroes team rose
Plus like you said, she's long overdue for a new one
¡PONLE QUE DIGA!:"¡HUMONGOSAURIO HASTA LA MUERTE!"She's a major character?
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.She appears in pretty much every game and adaptation. She's not playable levels of important but she's one of the most major characters. I'm honestly surprised she gets so little merchandise (especially since she's pink).
Yeah, Amy is more or less a major character overall. It's a little muddled nowadays, due to the series being very restrictive about major characters beyond Sonic himself. Even Tails feels like he's a secondary character now.
She's basically in the same spot Knuckles is in. She's a major character when the franchise wants her to be, but is on the backburner overall.
The basic reason for that is that people who enjoyed the game did so and moved on, whereas hatedoms have a tendency to persist. Overall, the portion of fans against Colors is still overall a Vocal Minority, given the game's critical, fandom and commercial success, but now they're the only ones really talking about the game any more, given the ongoing claims about the perceived terrible-ness of the current era, and Colors is now being linked to things that portion of the fanbase disliked about the later games like Forces.
Or in short, it's not that the game is now hated in retrospect. It's that the people who disposed to hate it to begin are the only ones still consistently expressing their opinions about it. It's how displeased portions of fanbases tend to act in general, and is one of the main reasons why large fanbases are more iconically represented by older groups with negative opinions: they're easily seen as larger and more representative than they actually are (see also: Star Wars).

"The difference between reality and fiction is that fiction has to make sense." - Tom Clancy, paraphrasing Mark Twain.Another factor is that Colors came out in a period where just having a good game was enough for this series. Afterward, people started to notice that it has some flaws and tend to exaggerate.
It's the same thing that happens with every game with an adult fandom, they're the only ones who spend their time complaining about perceived flaws, which gives off the impression that the entire fanbase hates the series.
A lazy millennial who's good at what he does.Nowadays Unleashed seems a lot more popular than Colors, I'd say. It gets praised for a lot of stuff - its overworld, its worldbuilding, its story (in comparison to its successors at least), its art-style, its gameplay - while Colors... It's Colors. It used to be popular but now it's seen through a more critical eye.
With Colors I can very much recognize its inherent flaws (though given my lack of care for story that weakness means little to me). However the aesthetics of the stages, utilization of red rings for exploration/replayability, and use of 2D platforming (however blocky it might be) rather than another alternate gameplay style means it holds so much charm even that even less than stellar design decisions don't bother me that much.
Its an inversion with Unleashed as it is definitely the most polished game of 3D titles, and feels really complete in a lot of areas. The issue however is that as someone who's never been big on alternate gameplay styles in Sonic games, was lukewarm about Sonic in the real world setting, and likes a good balance of speed, platforming, & exploration... Unleashed becomes a technically fine game but only half of which actually appeals to me.

Black Knight and Unleashed had the same tone: generally family-friendly but knew to ratchet up the seriousness during tense conflict.
Compare the cutscene before the Dark Queen and Chip's sendoff to every boss battle in Colors.
A cruel, sick joke is still a joke, and sometimes all you can do is laugh.
