I'll say again. Are we actually going to DO something here?

I guess we need a page action crowner here because several options have been discussed but no consensus has been made. I think I'll go ahead and make one.

Edit: Here it is.

How do we decide when a riff "lays the foundation for the entire song"?

[up] Yeah, that's the problem. I really can't see this being objective and still working. It's too close to Ear Worm.

It looks like the winning option is going to be making the page YMMV. However, I think the page needs more work than just doing that. For one thing, a lot of the examples seem to ignore the first part of the definition and just say that the riff is "instantly recognizable". This is hard to tell, though, because most of the examples are X Just X. Also, as the two poster above me pointed out, it is kinda hard to determine if a riff "lays the foundation for the song". I'm not exactly sure what that means. Then there's the name, which is unclear in its use of the word "epic" and seems to use the it to mean "awesome", which I don't think is the kind of wording we want.

What I should have done was split the leading crowner option into "rename and make YMMV" and "don't rename and make YMMV". Oh well, maybe we should have a single prop rename crowner after this one's finished.

That people think making this YMMV will solve the problem here really worries me.

It's like tagging a page YMMV has become a code word for "this page is dead to us". The moment something is YMMV we give up on it. We don't care how horrible the description is, or how bad the examples have become; everyone can claim whichever YMMV on whatever they want, without even bothering to explain how or why it actually applies. Natter away, good tropers, abuse good style with abandon. The page can sit there and rot, for all we care.

Whenever we applied this attitude to anything on the site in the past, we eventually ended up cutting that something. If we keep this up, one day someone up there is going to wake up and say, "We allowed example lists on YMMV pages and basically got a load of useless crap. So, fine. From now on, no more example lists on YMMV pages."

Who wants to read through a list that goes "Oh, and my favorite song too!" "Oh, and mine too!" "Oh, and mine too!"? In a YMMV page or otherwise? Seriously, who does?

I'm okay with cutting the YMMV pages. As far as I'm concerned, the only positive impact they can have on the site is diverting opinions away from the main page, and that's the only reason I would defend the page at all.

Back on topic, this was never resolved. The crowner currently has no consensus. We need more votes here, people.

I'd defend Crowning Music Of Awesome because I've found some stuff I really liked that way.

But anyway, on topic: "Lays the foundation for the entire song" is objective. "Instantly recognizable" is probably subjective, and the way "epic" is usually used in internet parlance the name kind of invites Crowning Music-type entries.

I usually don't like renames but maybe one would help in this case?

Edit: oh, it was already in the crowner. Carry on then.

The trope name sounds like Crowning Music Of Awesome specifically for riffs. But the description and some of the examples are more like famous or popular riffs.

I agree that it needs a rename/reworking. Instantly recognizable riffs are more of a trope than gushing about cool riffs. The people who want to gush can go to Crowning Music Of Awesome under Rock or Heavy Metal. "Recognizable" is still subjective, however, so it needs the YMMV banner.

Calling this one. Cut the examples and make it YMMV.
