Well, there's a manga called Getter Robo, which TTGL takes its cues from.
I don't expect people to know, but it's pretty famous in Japan.

TTGL is pretty great. But I'm such a big mecha fan that it just registers as "one great anime" and not as something genre defining.
I still think Gravion was better, anyhow.
Its pretty much just as over the top and revels in being a sendup of 80'-90's super robot shows

It's more that he isn't exactly subtle about where he borrows his influences from.
The Gundam names don't really have the same sort of monomaniacal method to their madness.
