Pokefutures HQ, A Podrail Station

Agent #1: You four. The color-coded ones. Please come with us.

-the other occupants of the pod quickly put a wide berth between themselves and the Memitos, who exchange a few wordless glances and nods-

Ever: Sure. Of course.

-they quickly file out of the pod, flanked by the Agents, and head away from the station, out of sight of civilians-

Agent #1: The four of you were seen in Wellspring Town. Eyewitness reports suggested you have Pokemon. Is that correct?

Ever: Yes.

Agent #1: Further, you were reported as claiming to not be "from here". What do you mean by that?

Ever: We're from another universe.

-behind them, Brie sighs-

Ever: We got here via a portal mishap. If you could help us get back home, that'd be fantastic.

Agent #1: ...Hm.

-she turns to the agent next to her-

Agent #1: Nick. Should we?

Nick: Leah.

Leah: They're doing us no harm. Plus, the faster we get them out of here, the less of a stir they'll cause.

Ever: Such a shame. I love causing stirs.

Leah: ...Please speak when you're spoken to. It'll make everything a lot easier.

-Ever shuts up as directed-

Nick: They have Pokemon. We could use those.

PEFE!Every: No. You couldn't.

-fortunately, Amanita has a death grip on the back of her shirt-

Leah: ...They're guests. Come on. We'll take them back to the portal generator, we'll send them back where they came from.

Nick: But—

Leah: They probably don't have more than...what, a few dozen Pokemon between them? You know how attached people of that timeline are to their pets—

-this gets a solid collective twitch from the Complex-

Leah: —you'd be breaking their hearts for a shipment of lightbulbs. Let's just get them home.

-there's an uncomfortable silence-

-Nick sighs-

Nick: Sure. Whatever.

-and the Memito Complex feel the air yanked from their lungs as they teleport-

Reynard: Did you say Macraul? That name sounds familiar. Wait. Well, I might come up with something, but I'll need to make a few calls and an ample amount of lead time.

-Delicious. Finally, some good fucking plot-

Pokefutures HQ, portal ro— wait what did you just say what's going to happen-

-they're in a room now! The room itself isn't the most interesting, though it is very big, bigger even than the average football stadium but it's dominated by a large machine, energy swirling off it and coalescing into a massive opaque disc in the air. The room is abuzz with scientists in Pokefutures labcoats-

-PEFE!Every suddenly gets very tense-

Leah: Relax. We're sending you home.

-she sighs-

I get you probably don't like us very much. But we're not that bad. We're not your enemies here.

-PEFE!Every opens her mouth to respond. Amanita clenches slightly harder on the back of her shirt-

Leah: We'll be out of each other's hair soon.

-meanwhile, Ever and Brie are talking in whispers. It's intentionally audible to Nick, in the interest of not dying, but-

Ever: Hey.

Brie: Hi.

Ever: I'm sorry.

Brie: Huh?

Ever: That we couldn't help. I know you wanted to. But...we have to get home. This dimension isn't good. I don't think there's saving it. And...I don't want to stick around and try.

Brie: ...Yeah. I get that.

-she sighs-

I just...I wanted to do something. It feels wrong.

Ever: We can't always be heroes.

Brie: ...

-...-

Portal Tech: Leah? Nick?

-she glares at Nick-

I know you're dating Juni, but you can't just walk in here whenever you—

Nick: It's not that. It's them.

-the portal tech blinks at the Memito Complex. Ever waves politely-

Portal Tech: (to PEFE!Every) Do I know you from somewhere?

-PEFE!Every frowns-

Ever: She's got one of those faces.

-they gesture at themself-

Portal Tech: ...Okay.

Nick: I doubt you know them. They got stranded here after some sort of portal malfunction. It would make sense, what with the weaker walls lately.

Ever: ...Huh.

Nick: What?

Ever: ...Uh, sorry, just got distracted. That portal's got a nice aesthetic.

-Nick stares at them-

Portal Tech: ...Huh. Maybe I saw the you from here, or something. You're old enough you'd have been around before the split.

Nick: Hey, Kara? Maybe you can figure this out after we send them back.

Kara the Portal Tech: Oh, whoops! Uh, okay, just tell us what universe you're from and I'll set the coordinates!

-...-

Ever: Uh.

Brie: Oh! I know this one.

-she rattles off a long string of numbers and letters. Neither Nick nor the other members of the Complex seem to register it, but Kara lights up, and begins punching in keys on a remote she's holding. Ever blinks at Brie-

Brie: What? It's kind of my job to know this sort of thing.

Ever: Fair enough, I guess.

Kara: ...Huh.

Ever: Uh, what? (to Nick) Is that a good huh?

Nick: We're not friends.

Ever: (to Leah) Is that a good huh?

Leah: I have no idea.

Kara: Oh, nothing. We, uh, we just...

-her face falls slightly-

We lost a lot of people on a mission into that universe. It's none of any of your business.

-PEFE!Every goes very pale. And then so do Ever and Brie-

Kara: Are you sure I don't know you? I feel like I've seen you around somewhere before.

Ever: I doubt you've ever met.

Kara: Right...

-she trails off, looking between PEFE!Every and her remote-

Kara: Slipping my mind...right. Anyway, best get you back. Sorry to hold you up with this.

-she's about to press the last button, when-

Nick: Wait.

Ever: Fuck.

Nick: Kara?

Kara: What?

Nick: From the footage. It's her.

16 and Arthur rushed over, he saw the Tyrantrum, blinked, looked at his sword, and then back to the beast.

"Well I'm out classed here. Hello everyone, tell me, how can I assist as someone who A) has no moves, and B) has no pokemon."

16 just started firing Techno Blasts at the beast hoping to sting it at least.

-Kai and Kaius sit down and make their orders.-

Kai: Mmh. We've gotta eat quickly so we don't run out of time.

Kaius: You're already the fastest eater I think I've ever seen.

Kai: Speedrunning tactics.

Kaius: It's a miracle you don't choke.

-The waiter raises an eyebrow-

Waiter: In a rush for something, are you?

-Kai nods-

Kai: Trying to... find a Murkrow before it gets dark.

Waiter: Oh? You're definitely in the right part of Kalos for them. You're a trainer, then?

Kai: You could say I dabble in it.

Waiter: You look the part, I'd say. Trainers have the most extra outfits ever.

Kai: We have the most fabulous outfits, thank you.

Waiter: Sure. Anyway, the Murkrow in the area have been unusually centered around Route 16, from what I hear. Even the Route 15 murders are seen around there more than usual.

Kai: Oh? Interesting.

Waiter: Yeah. Careful, though, they're particularly prone to stealing shiny stuff. They'll steal that feather thing right off your hat, if you're not careful.

-Kai blinks, and unclips the Rainbow Wing from their hat to store safely inside their coat.-

Kai: Good to know. We'll check them out.

-Their phone buzzes. Kai checks the message.-

ES: I think I found one. Here'zzz a pic.

Waiter: Right. Well, enjoy.

-They leave, and Kai and Kaius eat their respective meals (Kai eating much faster, of course) before paying and heading out.-

Ever: Smog.

-Ever's shadow erupts from the ground, choking clouds of gas spreading out from it and shrouding the area-

Glimmer: <Darkness is cast.>

Ever: Embargo.

Muninn: <On who?>

Ever: Oh, figure it out.

Nick: I can't track through the smoke! He's blocking my powers somehow!

Ever: They, thanks.

Calamity: <Here's a mnemonic for you!>

-the smog is dispelled by the force of a tremendous crash, and Nick is sent flying into the far wall, revealing the Complex, Pokemon at the ready-

Calamity: <Get it right or be hit by a fast-moving rock!>

Ever: I approve this message.

-Nick lies where he is, dazed-

Leah: But... wha—

Ever: Kara, right? We're going to need that remote, please.

Kara: I-I'm not going to—

PEFE!Every: Tuft, Switcheroo.

Tuft: <With pleasure!>

-and the remote vanishes from Kara's hands, replaced by a tuft of cotton-

Ever: ...

PEFE!Every: What? You were right, we needed it.

Ever: Yeah, that's just...never mind. Come on!

-PEFE!Every presses the button on the remote, and the opacity of the disc decreases, revealing what appears to be the Underground of PEFE HQ-

Ever: Let's go let's go let's—

-their way is barred by blades of ice-

-Ever skids to a stop before they run headlong into the spikes. Calamity doesn't slow down even slightly, but as they make contact, the spikes flare with obscura, and they're bounced away-

Calamity: <Ack!>

Ever: What...

-the Memitos turn...to see Leah holding out her hands, which are still smoking with frost-

Leah: Maybe you should have blocked my powers too.

Ever: ...You know, on further reflection, that would have been a good call.

-the Memitos and their Pokemon gather around PEFE!Every, who's now fiddling with the remote-

Ever: I...you were okay, I guess? You have the lifeforce of a Pokemon embedded in your neck, which kind of lowers my opinion of you.

Amanita: Ever, the only reason we've been letting you talk this much is for diplomacy!

Ever: I know what I'm doing!

Muninn: <I have cause not to believe that.>

-Kara darts for what seems to be an emergency button, but vines rise up in her path. She gulps and turns to the Memitos, where Amanita and Thorn are glaring at her, Thorn with a flower pressed to the ground-

Amanita: Don't touch that dial.

Brie: Are you quipping?

Amanita: It's a nervous response.

Brie: Huh. You really are a Memito.

Ever: Let's all calm down, okay? Nobody needs to get hurt any more today.

Leah: Your friend killed 24 people from here. Some of them were my friends. You knew about that?

Ever: ...Yes.

Leah: So what business do you have asking for our help?

Ever: ... (slowly, in a measured voice) Every, like your friends, was acting on behalf of her reality. While I understand that you're upset, your agents were actively hostile, and had already killed one staff member in our version of your facility. She was acting in self-defense, and—

PEFE!Every: I was doing no such thing. If anyone had attempted to teleport out, they would have been disintegrated instantly by the disruptor I set up. Also, while I killed 24 of your agents during that particular incident, I caused the death of an additional two the second time you sent people here, and my companions killed the other two from that squad.

-...-

Ever: Arceus damn it, Pef.

PEFE!Every: And I'm about to kill another...how many people are in this room?

Leah: Wait, wha—

-PEFE!Every presses the button on the remote again. This time, the scene past the portal becomes...utter darkness-

-and then a torrent of water gushes out of the portal-

-Mezzo reaches for another Pokeball, but before she can she's knocked into the air by an Outrage-

-she lands on the ground with a heavy thud-

Mezzo: Well fuck you too then...

-and collapses-

-Giri gets a Sludge Bomb in the face and falls off the Biolizard's body-

Giri: <Ow!>

-she immediately tries to retaliate with an Ice Punch-

Pianis: Oof. This isn't going very well.

-the water smashes into the wall of ice Leah made, spraying up over the room. This gives everyone a split second to react before the ice cracks and the water rushes out-

Ever: Estoc! Wide Guard!

Estoc: <Whoa whoa whoa wha—>

-and a giant bubble appears, the water dividing around it in both directions, scything Leah off her feet and catching up the rest of the scientists in a rapidly swelling tide-

Ever: What the hell.

PEFE!Every: Negotiations had broken down, and we weren't going to win that fight. We needed to deal with all of them at once.

-...-

Ever: ...Unfortunately, I think you're right. Fuck.

Amanita: So, uh, where exactly did you send that portal?

PEFE!Every: ...Uh...honestly, I have no idea. I just scrolled until I found one that was blocked and picked it.

Brie: I think it's this really weird dimension where giant Crawdaunt control the planet. They ended up pretty much sinking everything.

Ever: This is the future Team Aqua wants.

Amanita: Weren't you part of Aqua when we met?

Brie: Wait, what?

Ever: ...I don't want to talk about it.

-...-

Brie: We need a new plan. Every, how fast can you get the portal set back to our world?

PEFE!Every: ...Um.

Brie: Alright, then, I've got it.

-PEFE!Every blinks, but hands the remote over. Brie immediately begins fiddling with it. Ever peers curiously over her shoulder-

Brie: What? I work with dimensions for a living; I know how to work a portal generator.

Ever: I guess you're thinking with—

Brie: Finish that sentence and I will punch you so hard it'll reverberate up to Revy and back to me.

Ever: I'm sensing it's not the time.

Brie: Right. Now let me just—

Troy: I told you.

-he grabs PEFE!Every, a wave of energy rippling out from him and shoving the rest of the Complex away. The Wide Guard cracks-

Troy: I'm taking her.

Amanita: ...Shit.

Hale: -cancels his attack and uses the residual force of the Psycho Cut to throw himself at his trainer, kicking her out of the way and taking the Sludge Bomb himself- <Oof.>

Channah: -lands on a low roof-top- <Ow. Don't get any in your mouth.>

Hale: <Justallovertherestofme.Noted.> -looks up- <TheStormchaserismovingposition.>

Channah: <Oh. Great.> -Roosts, only to double over as the poison worsens-

Hale: -focuses and uses Psychic on the Quagsire-

Brie: We need to go get her.

Ever: That is a correct thing.

-a drop of water falls on their head. They look up, to where cracks in the Wide Guard have started to spread-

Estoc: <We also need to do something about the water.>

Brie: Right! Just a moment...

-she taps a button on the remote. The portal shifts back to the PEFE Underground, and water stops pouring into the room, the water level evening out around waist-height-

Ever: ...It's a start. Estoc? Get ready to Dive.

Estoc: <I usually am.>

Brie: Ever, what's your plan here?

Ever: How long do you think you and Amanita can hold this room?

Amanita: Wait, what?

Brie: ...Depends how fast they get people here.

Amanita: Uh, are you going somewhere?

Ever: Yeah, I'm gonna go grab Pef.

-...-

Amanita: Don't get yourself killed playing Alloy Engine.

Brie: We'll get you your time. Text once you've got her.

Ever: Brie, please. We're in another universe, you think I get reception?

-Brie stares-

Ever: You are, of course, correct. See you in a bit. Estoc?

Estoc: <Right! Let's—>

Nick: Hold up!

-and a shockwave of psychic energy rips through Estoc's Wide Guard. Water rushes in, Ever grabbing onto Estoc as Glimmer slides into their body, Brie leaping to cling to Calamity, and Amanita and Thorn bracing against each other-

Nick: You're going nowhere.

-he bursts from the water, floating over it towards the Memitos. Meanwhile, from the other corner of the room, water freezes over as Leah skates across the ice towards them-

Ever: ...Hmm. New plan.

Amanita: I already dislike it.

Ever: No, I think you'll appreciate it. Estoc, Waterfall that door. And make it a big one.

Amanita: ...Huh. You're right.

-Ever sends out Breeze-

Ever: Helping Hand!

-Breeze glows, and the glow spreads, Estoc lighting up with energy...-

-and the water in the room shifts, all of it being drawn towards the Araquanid as he lunges for the door-

Nick: Come back and— AUGH!

-he's knocked out of the air by the surging wave, and carried along in Estoc's wake. Leah, of course, never really had a chance of dodging, and as Estoc smashes headlong into the door out of the room, knocking it aside like so much cardboard, the two are sucked out after him as the water splashes out onto a long catwalk-

Ever: ...Heh. Nice.

Brie: ...You should probably make sure your Araquanid is alright.

Ever: I should most definitely do that. Arrivederci, you two.

-and they dash out of the room after Estoc-

-...-

Brie: ...Did they just say—

Amanita: (sighing) Yeah.

Brie: ...

Amanita: ...Come on. We've got work to do before they start sending in reinforcements.

Stormchaser,

-Sensing how the battle is currently going-

Well, if that's how he wants to play it. Trojan, raise the flag, it'll piss him off more.

-The white flag on top of the Stormchaser is replaced with a black flag with a Pokémon font "J"-

Pokefutures HQ, outside the portal room

-outside the portal room is what appears to be a great deal of space that was not meant to be accessed-

-easily the size of a football stadium, the area is crisscrossed with catwalks like the one to the portal room, but there are few walls, and the floor is far below-

-the Waterfall gradually peters out, water spilling off the catwalk and leaving behind a pair of rather bedraggled Pokefutures agents-

Estoc: <That was fun.>

-Ever runs up, slowing down next to Estoc-

Ever: Yeah. Now we just need to keep them the—

-Leah leaps back to her feet, slapping her palm on the ground as mist and obscura pool out from it. The water still on the catwalk freezes, ice spiking up towards Ever and Estoc-

Ever: Okay new plan.

-recalling Estoc, they dive off the catwalk, grabbing Breeze-

Breeze: <You know, you sent me out thirty seconds ago, and you haven't so much as said—>

Ever: Please stop me from falling.

Breeze: <Oh! Right, I guess that's important.>

-He does so, Ever gently sliding to a halt in midair, under the catwalk. Meanwhile, on the catwalk, Leah is helping Nick back to his feet-

Nick: You deal with the trainer. I'll get back inside and deal with the ones in there.

-Leah nods, and Nick levitates off the ground, zooming towards the door-

Ever: Bad choice. Breeze, you've got another passenger! Estoc, Spider Web!

-Ever sends out the Araquanid, Breeze launching him into the air, level with the catwalk. As Nick bolts, a sphere of webbing rockets past him, splattering on contact with the door frame and sealing it off. He changes direction, arcing up into the air-

Leah: Where are you...

-she tosses an Ice Shard at Estoc, but he's recalled before it can land-

Ever: Breeze, Gravity.

Breeze: <Uh, are you sure? That'll make everyone fall—>

Ever: I've got a plan!

Breeze: <Alright then! Buckle up!>

-his eyes glow a little brighter-

-and then Nick smashes through the catwalk, cloaked in a defensive telekinetic aura, splitting the catwalk in half and sending Leah tumbling down as well, as all three people (and Breeze) plummet-

Ever: That said, I did not claim it was a good plan.

Breeze: <I sort of assumed that from the start.>

-and everyone falls down into the dark-

-Amanita is setting up Toxic Spikes around the doorway-

Thorn: <This is fun. We have fun.>

Amanita: What I wouldn't give to have a Qwilfish on hand right now...hey, Brie, do you have a mon with Stealth Rock by any chance?

Calamity: <Oh, come on. It takes all the fun out of hitting people with rocks if it's the people doing the hitting.>

-nevertheless, they launch splintery shards of rock over the Toxic Spikes-

Amanita: ...Thanks, I think.

-meanwhile, talking to the scientists still stuck in the room-

Brie: Don't worry. We're not going to hurt anybody for any reason. We just need to get back our kidnapped friend, and then we'll be out of here.

Kara: ...I don't know why you think trying to be diplomatic now is going to help you any.

Brie: I guess it's just a vague hope.

-she notices one of the scientists inching for the emergency button-

Brie: Uh, please don't do that.

-and sends out Tara-

Brie: Hey, Tara?

Kara: Huh?

Brie: No, Tara, that's the name of my Jumpluff.

Kara: You named it?

Tara: <It?!>

Brie: ...This may go more easily if you don't talk. Tara, if you see anyone trying to press that big red button, put them to sleep before they let anyone know we're here.

-the scientist freezes. Kara looks nervous-

Kara: ...Like, to sleep to sleep?

Brie: What? No, like...jeez, how awful is this reality?

-she gestures at Tara-

Look at that ball of fluff.

-Tara waves one of her cotton balls happily, seeming to have already forgotten the insult-

Brie: You think she could hurt anyone?

Kara: She's a Pokemon. That's what they're for, isn't it? Instruments of war.

Brie: Tara is at best an instrument of hugs. Go on. Pet her.

Kara: ...No.

F!Robin glances at the newcomers, Sigurd interposing another Protect barrier between the Outrage and himself and his trainer. "Whatever it is operates on different elemental affinities than the standard for this word normally does. Hit it with Flying-type moves!"

Artoria and Mordred take Outrage to the face, but mostly weather the hit.

F!Robin frowns and sends out Mira. "Mira, keep everyone topped off. Whatever that is hits hard."

-PEFE!Every and Troy appear here, in what appears to be a small, and poorly lit office. The only thing that can really be seen are a pair of softly glowing blue eyes in the corner-

???: Finally. Let us get a look at the young woman who has been causing us so much trouble. Troy, you can go.

Troy: Ma'am, are you sure that's a good idea?

???: I can handle myself.

Troy: Right. Incidentally, when I arrived in the portal room, it was...chaotic. This one's associates may attempt a rescue mission.

???: How irritating. Deal with them, then.

-Troy coughs delicately-

???: What?

Troy: While I have no doubt that I could manage it, the other three are...fairly capable in terms of combat. It may be more expedient if I do not engage alone.

-there's a long silence. Troy gulps-

PEFE!Every: Bad boss?

Troy: Quiet.

???: Acceptable. Take squads 14-16 with you.

-PEFE!Every's eyes widen-

???: Go.

-and the two are alone together-

???: Step closer.

PEFE!Every: Why don't you come here?

-and she's yanked across the room telekinetically, and forced into a seat opposite the shadowed figure-

???: ...Hm. You cannot see in the dark, can you? My apologies. I have had this tapetum lucidum for some time; I forget that light is necessary for most humans.

-a light switch somewhere in the room flicks on, revealing the face of the figure-

-aside from the blue eyes, it's familiar. Even without the careful grooming, the plastic surgery...-

-where last we left off, Ever, Breeze, Leah, and Nick were falling-

Ever: We're sort of working improvisationally here.

-they recall Breeze, sending out Merle-

Merle: <Hey, Ever, what's— WHY CAN'T I FLY>

Ever: Gravity. Uh, the move Gravity. Can you carry people with you with Feint Attack?

Merle: <Uh, if they're not too big, or if I don't need to carry them very far. Wh—...

Ever: What?

Merle: <Are you familiar with conservation of momentum?>

Ever: Intimately. Aim for that guy.

-and the two strike the ground, at what seems like the bottom of the dome-

-and pass into it-

-reappearing from the shadow of another module, traveling almost horizontally, as they plow into Nick, knocking him out of the air as the Gravity wears off. Leah, for her part, immediately summons up ice to slow her descent, landing lightly, but Nick is sent soaring into the distance. Ever, meanwhile, clings desperately to Merle as she flaps wildly, landing...somewhere in the shadows-

Ever: I never want to do that again.

Merle: <Don't be such a baby.>

-Multiman notices the flag and scowls, hovering up just out of firing range in his hovercraft-

-Ever is skulking-

-it's a fairly impressive skulk, though it's got nothing on Merle's, the Murkrow blending in entirely with the shadows in the Pokefutures HQ underbelly. Ever, for their part, makes an irritatingly blue contrast to the general gray of everything surrounding them. They've compensated by hiding under what remains of the catwalk-

...Okay. Let's see.

One of me, vs. two of them. Muninn can shut down one's powers for a minute or two, but not if they find me before I find them. With how much noise a Pokeball makes, sending him out stands a good chance of that happening. Plus, if I hit one of them, the other will probably get me unless I can work out a plan before Nick gets back on his feet...

Hmm. Maybe someday I'll think about my actions and the consequences thereof.

-they're snapped out of their thoughts by a light pecking on their hand. They look down to see Merle giving them a quizzical look-
