-Icicle is interrupted by a fissure appearing below him, and a blast of energy striking upwards-

Forte: Whoa!

Rookidee: <That's what you get, mean thing! It's my nest and you can't have it! Go away!>

-a swirling storm rages above the Rookidee, and it grows stronger as Icicle falls-

-as everyone else is looking up at it, Felis takes the opportunity to pounce on the Rookidee and claw with a Night Slash-

Felis: <You are just a plaything, so please shut your beak and die already.>

Mezzo: We're not killing it.

Felis: <Fine, shut your beak and faint already. Better, oh beloved master?>

Mezzo: This is really not the time.

Rookidee: <I'm bigger than you now, cat! That means I'm stronger, and you can't make me do anything!>

-a wave of energy pulses over the area, passing through everyone present-

Fortis: Oh my gosh! What did that do?

Pianis: Now I'm really starting to think this was a mistake.

-some of the energy scattered around flows into Icicle, and he rises to his feet-

Icicle: <I did? I don't know. But it doesn't matter! This is about the honor of Team Glacier, and I won't let it be claimed by this little bird!>

Rookidee: <I'm not little!>

-the Rookidee hits with another Max Strike, but this time Icicle stays standing-

Pianis: Okay, let's not panic. Gigantic or not, this is still a bird, and birds are weak to ice. So this should be my specialty. Forte?

Pianis: Dual Ice Beam on the count of 3. Go for the wings.

The elevator dinged as someone arrived, getting everyone's attention. As the former salaried-turned-freelancer waved nervously to his old coworkers, he saw his boss wave him over into his office.

"Evening, sir," Colton said simply, sitting down and adjusting the gray jacket on his shoulders.

"No need for the formality," he waved off, pointing to the camera behind him. "We're filming this, so we want this to more or less be TV-ready. Just wear your heart on your sleeves, and we'll have plenty of material to work with."

An Hour and a Half Later

"I can edit the video together for you," Colton offered.

"No, I got it," a coworker offered. "You two have your battle."

"Should they have their battle before we begin editing?"

"Good call."

"Where, though?" The boss asked.

"...Xatu?"

Kim: “Seems like it.”

Geddy: <What should we do now?>

Kim: “Well, that answer is obvious— go to the Wild Area that Elton mentioned, of course.”

-At that moment, an ear-splitting siren starts to blare!-

-Ian begins to run as fast as he did when he was called to help the J-Team fight in the final battle against the Mobius Society.-

-Ian then trips over his own feet, clenches his hand into a fist and then punches the ground as he falls!!!-

-Scarlette quickly stumbles out of bed after a day of Doing Nothing Productive™ and makes an effort to look somewhat presentable and not like she's just been spending all day in bed Doing Nothing Productive™, and opens the door to her room curiously. Outside, Rose stands, fidgeting and looking somewhat awkward and uncomfortable.-

Scarlette: Oh, Rose! Hi!

Rose: Heya. Uh.

Scarlette: ...You've got that look on your face. It's the "there's something important and mildly bad that I need to talk to you about" look.

Rose: Fuck, it's that obvious, huh?

Scarlette: You're not the most subtle. What's going on?

Rose: Right, right, I'll get to that. Uh. Gods, this is gonna be weird to ask, and I can't believe I'm asking you, but also you're literally the only person I know to go to for this. Can you, uh... get in contact with Lucius? Or, at least try to?

-Scarlette blinks-

Scarlette: Oh, sure! Sure thing. Gimme just a sec.

-The response comes back surprisingly quickly.-

-Scarlette just sorta glances up, almost asking What It's About, but just gets back to typing-

Scarlette: All right, he's on his way. How long do you wanna bet he'll take to get here?

Rose: ...Either comically short or—

Scarlette: Yeah, comically short, he always is.

-Rose stifles an unexpected laugh, which is suddenly overlaid by a clattering noise in the hallway.-

Lucius: ...goddammit, Maul, I asked you to give me a moment!

Maul: ~I did. The moment passed.~

-There's a long sigh, followed by a knock on the door.-

Scarlette: See? Told you.

-She opens the door again.-

Scarlette: Hey, Luce.

Rose: Uh, hi.

-Rose rubs her neck awkwardly, a gesture that is ironically mirrored by Lucius.-

Lucius: ...Hey.

-He looks over at Scarlette.-

Lucius: So, care to explain what's going on? I'm not in a rush or anything, but... well, judging by the atmosphere in here, I'm guessing we don't want to spend too much time dwelling on it.

Rose: Yeah, you've got it right. It's... about Paula.

Scarlette: ...Ah.

Lucius: ...Oh. Yeah. "Ah" indeed.

-He lets out another long sigh.-

Lucius: Why can't an urgent message just be about an urgent need to grab some beers and play Dad of Boy for a few hours? Why does it always have to be this sort of shit?

Scarlette: If this doesn't go completely ass-up, that can be on the table. I'll probably need a drink after this anyway.

Rose: I know, I know, I don't like it either. I just, felt like it was something you should hear about before it just up and happened.

Scarlette: Before what happens?

-Rose exhales.-

Rose: ...So. Okay. Something's been going on, pertaining to Mindscape Stuff. And tomorrow, due to said Mindscape Stuff, all the missing memories of everything she did, are gonna make their way back into my head. I don't... I don't know if that's gonna go with a personality override, but I thought you needed to know. Beforehand. Before it was too late.

Lucius: ...Fuck. Forget needing a drink after this, I think I need one now.

-He glances around as if hoping to find one before taking a breath to compose himself.-

Lucius: So... yeah. I get why you called me over now. Honestly, the fact that you did gives me a lot of faith in you. Still, I think this means I have to stick around here till it happens, just in case... and I gotta ask, is it just memories you'll be getting back? Do you know what's gonna happen, and is there a way to stop it if we have to?

-Rose shakes her head.-

Rose: I don't... know. I don't know. Even amongst the whole overarching stuff we've been dealing with in the Metaverse, this is an outlier. If things go right, I'll be able to overpower her, and not let her fully take over. But I won't know until it's happening. If I can't...

Scarlette: ...

-Scarlette sighs, and goes to the fridge to grab a couple drinks, tossing one to Lucius.-

Scarlette: ...I don't want to see you turn into her. But if you do, I'll do what I need to do. That's what you want, right?

-Rose nods, slowly, glancing at Scarlette, then Lucius.-

Rose: Y-yeah. If I become her, if she becomes me, she needs to be held responsible for everything. I know she's hurt people, and I especially know she's hurt you, Lucius.

Lucius: ...She didn't hurt me. Not personally, not really. But she hurt my friends, people who I never want to see hurt again.

-He pauses for a moment, downs the can Scarlette tossed him in a single gulp, and gestures for another.-

Lucius: And she's you. If we're talking entirely literally. You're the person who did those things, who hurt my friends, who laid waste to an entire region and felt nothing but glee in the process. And yet... you're sorry. Even without the memories of what you did, you know you hurt people. You want to make amends. I... I don't think the Paula I knew would ever have done that. I don't even think she would've felt sorry about not feeling sorry.

-He pauses for a few moments, as if unsure about what to say, before giving another long sigh.-

Lucius: ...You're a better person than she ever was. And I don't want to see you disappear.

-Rose is quiet for a few moments. A couple times, she tries to come up with a response, but comes up blank.-

-After a bit, she swallows dryly.-

Rose: I don't want to disappear either. I know I won't be the same when I come out on the other side, no matter how it happens, but I don't want to disappear. I don't want to let go of that.

Scarlette: Mmmm.

-Rose glances at Scarlette.-

Rose: ...Scarlette?

-Scarlette sighs.-

Scarlette: ...I really shouldn't be the one judging you here. I wasn't the one she hurt. I just got a secondhand account of it all, however many years later, and made some pretty horrible decisions as a result. I just... I'm gonna hope that you're still you in the end. Because I know you far better as a friend than as a foe. And I won't let her take that away. Okay?

Rose: ...Thank you. I'm... glad I met you. I'm glad I can trust you.

-After a long and awkward pause, Lucius raises his can in the air.-

Lucius: Well, here's to making terrible decisions and then trying to fix our mistakes! I think that's something all of us here can drink to.

-He makes a mock toast before turning back to Rose.-

Lucius: For the record, I'm with Scarlette on this one. You seem like you're a pretty decent person and I hope we get to hang out more. That said, if there is a total Paula Override then I'm gonna kick your ass. I won't be happy about it, though! ...Well, maybe a little happy, because Paula was a terrible person and I'll probably get some satisfaction out of thrashing her. But it'll mostly be me doing my solemn duty and lamenting the loss of the Rose that was.

-Rose sweatdrops.-

Rose: Let's, uh... just hope it doesn't come to that. I'd like to not deserve having my ass kicked for once.

-She pauses, then sighs and digs out her phone.-

Rose: ...I... should probably get moving, now. I've still got a couple people I need to deliver the message to.

Scarlette: Ah, right. You've got a lot of ends that need tying. Lucy, you wanna stay for Urgent Beer Drinking? I've got a couple brands of weird terrible beer I've been looking forward to regretting trying.

Lucius: I mean, I definitely wanna drink until I mostly forget everything we just talked about, but... shouldn't we keep an eye on her? I don't mean any offence to Rose, there's definitely people she still oughta sit down and have a chat with, but if she does go full Paula... well, Paula caused chaos and destruction just for the sake of it. I don't wanna sit back and let that happen knowing I could've stopped it.

-Rose sorta falls quiet. Scarlette quickly takes the sign to vouch for her.-

Scarlette: I've heard a little about the sort of Mindscape stuff she's involved in, beyond just the Paula thing, and... it kinda sounds like something we won't be able to directly help with. We just have to be ready to do whatever's necessary after the fact. And besides, it's not until tomorrow, right? I know I would feel awful just hovering over her until then. I think... we should just be prepared. Y'know?

Lucius: ...If you say so. Just... try to check in with us tomorrow at the first opportunity, okay, Rose? Make sure we don't have to assume the worst.

Rose: O-of course. I will. I promise.

Scarlette: We're counting on you to keep it, then. Good luck.

-Rose nods, and gets to work on another text.-

"The Founders or the Mythology stuff? Silas needs to get you more books," Autumn responded.

Tassa stepped forward, "May we go inside now?"

"Hm? OH! Right!"

Autumn opened the doors and the smell of disinfectant filled the recycled air, this was the research center. Various Ground Types were examining samples of Martian geology, a few engineers were working with steel type pokemon to repair rovers, a few PRB designs, and most curiously, the Curiosity rover itself.

Psychic types were working with researchers calculating new vectors, a few Magnezone family mons floating about, trying to sort out containment.

And on the last table, was what caught Tassa's eyes, there were samples of castle construction, guardian pieces, and even a blade hilt. She slowly walked over, pale, her eyes watery as she stared at the results, "Is this all of it?"

<Tassa... I know it isn't much but it is something,> Ganon said trying to calm her.

Tassa took a deep breath, "So much lost. And here's what's left."

<Well the island itself->

"Is a place devoid of my family. Even my closest friend no longer lives there."

Autumn wasn't sure how to respond and looked to the others for explanations.

The Wedding

Kim: "Wait, you've heard of it?"

Evelyn's Camp- Tent

Kim: "Oh..." (she lays back down in her sleeping bag) "You can tell me about it tomorrow, Ian. Good night."

(Meanwhile, Freddie lies awake, shaking in his bag.)

Freddie: <W-what was that?!>

Geddy: (soothingly) <It was probably just a thunderstorm... you're fine...>

Freddie: <Oh, okay...>

(Geddy and Elton hug him, and he slowly falls back asleep.)

The Next Morning- Evelyn's Camp- Tent

(Kim wakes up and yawns, before rubbing her eyes and blinking. She puts her glasses back on, and looks forward to Dio's sleeping bag. Once she sees that Dio is a Gliscor- and still asleep- she smirks.)

Kim: (smirking) "It worked."

(She turns to Ian.)

Kim: "Ian? Wake up..."

-Even as winter approaches, there's one spot in the world that is forever fall.-

-All year round, the Bellchime Trail is lined with trees bearing leaves in autumn colors — red, yellow, gold, and everything in between. Occasionally, snow falls, or frost laces the foliage, but even as leaves fall to the ground, the trees are never bare. Interestingly, the grass has the same golden hue — much more vibrant than the pallid straw-yellow of dead grass. It is a symbol of life and rejuvenation known across the world, and quite possibly one of the biggest defining features of the Johto region.-

-Today, there is frost along the trail, glimmering in the sunlight among the golden background. The air is chilly, and Rose shivers as she waits for Skye and Diane to show up.-

Diane: Hey, there you are.

-Rose perks up at the sound of Diane's voice, and turns around to greet them.-

Rose: ...Heya.

Skye: So, what's up? It sounded important.

-Rose nods, swallowing nervously.-

Rose: Right. Um. So.

-She rubs the back of her neck.-

Rose: ...There's something that's going to happen tomorrow. It's a major part of taking down Mobius, as well as stopping a potential Cipher splinter group before it forms. In the process... I will very likely be getting my memories back.

-The implications dawn on Skye and Diane, and their expressions harden.-

Skye: ...Ah.

Diane: You'll be... her, again.

-Rose looks away.-

Rose: I don't... I know that it's possible, that she'll take over again. I don't want her to, but I may not have a choice.

-Skye crosses her arms.-

Skye: You'll always have a choice. You always did. She always did.

Rose: I...

Diane: ...

-Diane spends a moment intently analyzing Rose's demeanor. Rose, by contrast, can't bring herself to look directly at either party.-

-After a moment, she sighs.-

Diane: ...Ever since I met you, as Rose, I've never really known how to feel about you. I've done my best to put my grievances aside, because I could tell that you weren't the same person who hurt me six years ago. But all the same, it's felt like you were her way of escaping retribution. I've never been able to find resolution to everything she put me through. And that fucking hurts.

Rose: I-I know. I'm— I'm sorry—

Diane: And you shouldn't be sorry, is the thing! Honestly, you can't actually be, because you, Rose, never did it! You're not sorry, you're scared, because you're an innocent woman with no choice but to take the blame for atrocities you never really committed! But now...

-She takes a moment to breathe, recognizing how heated her attitude is becoming.-

Diane: ...Now, you're telling us that you can get your memories back. You'll be her again, and that means you'll have her history again. The thing that's in question is whether it'll destroy what makes you, you.

-Rose starts to stammer out a response.-

-The attempt fails, and all she lets out is a choked, restrained sob. And then another, and another, as she uses every nerve she has to avoid fully breaking down.-

Skye: ...Hey. Listen. I... think I speak for all three of us, when I say that we don't want to lose you. And this is a sacrifice that you're clearly scared of making, out of fear that you'll lose yourself. That the Rose we know will be dead. Right?

-Rose nods weakly, trembling.-

Skye: Right. So, promise us that won't happen. Promise you'll come out on the other side, and everything that you've seen and done within your memory will be more important to you than... whatever it was she was thinking when she joined Cipher.

Diane: Yeah. And... promise me, you'll come to talk to me. After you get her memories back. I know that a lot can change in six years, and if you're still willing to help find a resolution to everything that happened, I think that would go a long way to helping stitch these old wounds back together.

-Rose inhales, and exhales, in one last effort to compose herself, and finally makes eye contact. First with Diane, then Skye, then Diane again.-

Rose: ...I-I will. I promise.

-Diane gives a small, slow nod. And smiles. And hugs Rose.-

-The dam breaks, and Rose hugs Diane tightly, crying into her shoulder. Skye hesitates for a moment, before joining in on the hug. A gust of wind blows, sending a few leaves falling between the two towers.-

Me: -thinks to self- She must really miss Hyul... I mean... If I were the prince or princess of the Unova Region and it were to be lost to history as Hyul is, I bet that is exactly the kind of homesickness that is difficult to cure... When you know you can never go home again...

-Ian then walks over to Tassa in the hopes of comforting her...-
