I got to the Cave of the Dead and it has enemies who crawl around with the poison statues on their back so you know what I think I'll go somewhere else. Is there any reason to go there or should I just go find the Dragon Stone and head for Dragon's Rest?

IIRC that's one of the co-op areas. They are all designed to be played with multiple people and are extremely unfun to play solo. Believe it or not Cave of the Dead is the least annoying one to play by yourself, it has nothing on the co-op areas from the other two DLC's.
Fortunately you don't really lose much by skipping out on them. They all have lame/unsatisfying bosses at the end and are not required to fight in order to unlock the true final boss of the game.

gtf out of there. As dragh just said, that's the least offensive of the multiplayer zones, and it's already awful. If you don't like hard meme dark souls, you have nothing to do there.

youre not my real dad
I ate your real dad
That makes me your real dad by the transitive property
dark souls 2 sucks
hold me back fam
DS 2 doesn't suck, but it's definitely the weakest game out of the series.
I enjoyed it still. It's just that I enjoyed the other two games more.
And yes, the DLC's bonus areas all suck. As do their bosses.
The only one I'd recommend even trying to finish would be Iron Passage in Brume Tower. Hard as hell with one of the worst bosses in the game Smelter Demon 2.0, except with magic instead of fire and different timing, but the prize at the end is really handy.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI hear Smurf Demon is highly resistant to magic so I thought I'd skip it unless my Fire Longsword can do enough damage on its own.
I cheesed it by relying on the two npc summons and shot it full of Poison arrows.
Yes, it can be poisoned.
If you want to beat it in a fair way for some reason, go with Dark damage.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI would not call that one of the worst bosses in the game. Yeah it's not very different from Smelter Demon, but Smelter Demon was a good boss fight so I don't see how a slightly upgraded version suddenly becomes terrible. Unoriginal, yes.
I wouldn't call Smelter good. He feels bad to play against since staying near him drains your HP and unless you have high Adaptability dodging his shit feels like a coin-flip. Blue Smelter is the same but worse, but not even because of the fight itself so much as the fact that the Iron Passage is absolute trash if you're playing solo.
It is literally the most bullshit, unfair and frustrating experience I've had in a Souls game. Clearing it is a test in patience, and the fact that the boss there is a Smelter reskin is just insult to injury. Of course, part of this is my fault since I didn't realize that area was "optional" to clear the tower. Once I found out I didn't have to go through it I bailed with a vengeance.
I think I got though it with gratuitous use of poison arrows.
The only good thing about those multi-player areas is the sir alone fight.
"when you stare too long into the abyss, Xehanort takes advantage of the distraction to break into your house and steal all your shit."Sir Alonne isn't in the multiplayer area.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI'm fairly sure his area counts as one too.
"when you stare too long into the abyss, Xehanort takes advantage of the distraction to break into your house and steal all your shit."The Co-op areas where non-DLC players can be summoned are Cave of the Dead (ganksquad boss), Iron Passage (blue smelter demon), and Frigid Outskirts (twin tigers).
Disgusted, but not surprisedNevermind then, I seemed to recall you could summon people without the dlcs for that fight.
"when you stare too long into the abyss, Xehanort takes advantage of the distraction to break into your house and steal all your shit."I wouldn't know, I only ever used the NPC summons for that fight.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI tend to solo him myself, because throwing in summons just buffs his hps and turn the battle into an aggro roulette. One on one has the merit of being very straightforward. Kinda reminds me of Furi in the design.
"when you stare too long into the abyss, Xehanort takes advantage of the distraction to break into your house and steal all your shit."Sir Alonne is definitely a boss non-DLC owning players can help with.
I'm shaping up to be playing Dark Souls 2 last of the series (beaten Demon's, near endgame and either going through the DLC or on the cusp of doing so with Dark Souls and Bloodborne, and just over halfway through 3) and I haven't seen the DLC with my eyes yet, I've watched an LP of the rest of it (a while ago).
Boy you dudes are making me look forwards to THAT.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
Yeah, that's what I meant.
Velstadt is a problem (though I remember doing quite the bit of damage to him, then again he'd better take his damage with what I'm sending in his face), but elana goes down super fast and I don't think I've seen her summon him very often. Most of the time she goes for the golden skeletons, and I think you can just leave one alive and pummel Elana instead with little difficulty and she doesn't summon until you kill the last one. Anyway, my point is that she doesn't summon velstadt that often from what I've seen, and when she doesn't, she's a non-problem.
