Yeah... that Necromancer is /tough/. Any tips on how to beat him and his army of undead?
I went with Order of Sunsetter. Bonus points to those that get the ref.
edit: ...yeah just look at all the fluff on my avatar, those are all clues XD

Ne Obliviscaris Pesterchum Handle: christenedTemplarI named mine Order of Ni...though now I kinda want to change it lol. Anyways really enjoying the game so far, never really played tactics games over than the ones that came out for the GBA (FFTA....Fire Emblem...Advance Wars...) but I'm really, really enjoying this one.
For the necromancer battle I remember that I flew the winged guy whose name I forgot up to the top and focused all his attacks on the necromancer. I also got my forces to huddle together and down the undead while trying to hide away and get to the top. I had a good amount of knights and one cleric for that battle so that helped since Heal both cures your party members and damages the undead. It was a tough battle though, especially since I was a little underleveled for it...
It's impossible to not be underleveled for that fight.
That's why they made it optional.
But yes, the optimal strategy is to have Canopus fly up and go after the Necromancer, he'll only really have to deal with one skeleton archer at best.
It's also a good idea to buy the shop items that buff units with sidestep (otherwise you'll be drowning in skeleton archer arrows) as well as some to increase Canopus' attack power, accuracy, and magic resistance.
Despite being a Necromancer Nybeth can take a hit or two. The entire battle might come down to Canopus' finishing move(a good thing about finishers is that if you go past the amount of SP required for it, 100 with 200 being maximum possible SP, the extra will be used so that the attack does more damage).

Umbran Climax◊I've got the Order of Ascalon - the spear the St. George used.
i. hear. a. sound.Haha yeah, I actually had no idea that the fight was optional so I kinda just wandered in it and went "Whoah! Difficulty spike!" Anyways yeah I used Canopus' finishing move to kill the necromancer. Gotta love it.
Wow, okay, the Chariot Tarot system is hugely useful this early in the game. I've had a couple of "Oh THAT's how that works" moments, gone back through the battle, and turned things around properly. I wish Fire Emblem games had this system. :D
But somehow,◊Huzzah, beat him on my second try, using two clerics and some extra archers to harry his units while I got my MC and the winged guy up there and hammered on him.
My Order is from Homestuck, specifically one of the songs. It's awsome.
Ne Obliviscaris Pesterchum Handle: christenedTemplarHow does this compare to FF Tactics, which I'm told was a Spiritual Sequel?
It fares pretty well! You have a bigger team to work with instead of just 5 characters, the CHARIOT system lets you retry things and really learn the system well.
I'm just starting but it seems to be pretty deep. all Classes level up at once, but everyone gets skills individually, so you can customize in different ways. One Cleric learns Light attacks and ways to deal with the Undead, while another gets more heals and buffs, that sort of thing.
Also your avatar looks really familiar.
Ne Obliviscaris Pesterchum Handle: christenedTemplarVery favorably. Much more well balanced, way more things to account for, choices do more than change conversations, it's prettier, better translation(than both the original and Wot L), no bad slowdown like War of the Lions.
About the only thing Tactics has over this is the fact that Square apparently forgot to add an outfit option at shops when designing the user interface, and Delita as an antagonist.
Umbran Climax◊^^^ Yeah, I'd say this game is probably better (I'm only 6 battles in, so that may change!), but the shop interface could use a lot of work. If you remotely enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics, get it.
I beat the Necromancer by doing a little level grinding on the nearby hills (which I can't help but think are referencing the Mandalia Plains in FFT, due to the description. Or vice-versa I suppose.). By the way, you guys have no idea how excited I was when I first got into a random battle and THIS SONG starts playing. I don't know much about the Ogre series' music, but I LOVE this song! I was hoping it would be in it!
Yeah, I finally took that stupid Necromancer down, too. I didn't have Exorcism, so I had a small force down at the bottom of the hill keeping the undead busy while a small strike force climbed the hill and nailed the Necromancer. Excitement, adventure and really wild things. ^^
But somehow,◊They added some tracks from other Ogre battle games along with the remixed TO tracks.
There are a few completely new tracks. Like 'Taking the Field'.
So, has anybody decided what path they're going to take?
That unique Cleric who joins you should have Exorcism. Denam's sis has it too(her AI will rarely use it though).

Umbran Climax◊Ordered the game today. I assume it's perfectly feasible to grind your way to near godhood, as it was in FFT?

This game isn't nearly as broken as FFT.
Also grinding isn't easy since the random encounter rate is so low(and some encounters can really overwhelm you).
There are more unique characters than in Tactics though(some of which can have more than one unique class).

Umbran Climax◊Aww. I was very fond of the ridiculous 'Blackmage with Calculator secondary spamming Holy' trick. :P
I'll still probably grind. A lot. I have a fondness for it in tactical rpgs.
Well too bad.
Just got a Beast Tamer. Man do they suck to play as. Hoping the inevitable dragon recruit is worth it.
Umbran Climax◊Wait, I can't do that in this one?
Awwwwww...

I said 50 times in this thread that TO isn't remotely as unbalanced as FFT.
So why would one of the most broken generic classes in the latter be in the former?
Umbran Climax◊Finally got it in the mail
Tarot Cards are big and sturdy
Battles don't feel more or less difficult, just... different. The threat of troops getting knocked-out is higher, and the encounters are better-designed, but the threat of perma-death is lower. I'll be sticking to a self-imposed challenge of no knockouts (except for guests), thus keeping the difficulty about the same. I'm still in Chapter 1 so it's possible that the only problem is being limited to 7 troops per battle, and once you get to the full team of 12, the game becomes easier even when accounting for self-imposed challenges.
Recruited my first beasts. Can't wait to try them out in the next story battle.
Umbran Climax◊Just got the Terror Knight and Bandit classes. Looking forward to scaring the crap out of monsters and stripping people naked on the battlefield. :D
Also, this game has crafting? Oh god what have they done, I'll see you all next year sometime.
But somehow,◊Don't worry. It turns out the crafting is horrible. Your social life shall remain unscathed.
Oh, and Reptile guys are awesome. I still haven't unlocked its exclusive class though(Patriarch I think it's called).
So, what path did you guys take at the end of chapter 1? I chose Law.

Umbran Climax◊Not sure which is which. I told the Duke to go commit his own massacres. I'm a bit annoyed Ravness bought the farm, though, and Vyce's betrayal was a bit sudden. Well, maybe not THAT sudden, he had been whining for the whole chapter, but I'm still surprised he'd sever family (or near to family, anyway) connections so cavalierly.
But somehow,◊
They only wanted to serve their country you bastard.
I decided to go with the Order of Holy Win(the Infinity +1 Sword of Vagrant Story).
Umbran Climax◊
