Personally, the appeal that RO had for me was PVP and GVG. Killing other people is fun. PK servers were fun.
I used to play on Dark RO, Essence RO, and the now-defunct Legacy RO. Anyone else play there?
^ Couldn't do that in Essence RO since mosk_dun03 was a PVP map since it's where Zmey spawns, and my farming Sniper/Ranger had farm gear on (cloud hermit card, gargoyle card, orc archer's bow + sage endow)

iM@S archive of materials.Ooh. Lumi was a limited pvp: players could "race change" to elf or vampire with stat bonuses and minuses. And there were "night time" periods that increased rates in dungeon and turned on PVP for them everywhere. Towns were a massacre
That reminded me of Spiritus RO where you had "races" like Elf (permanent movespeed boost a-la Auth Badge and +10 Agi), Dwarf (tiny sprite, +10 Dex), Undead (+20% Max HP, permanent ED effect).
iM@S archive of materials.Rather extreme. Lumi was to the degree +2/-1 int-dex* tradeoff depending on race. Staying human was completely viable.

Spiritus RO was a super HR server though. So many days wasted in PVP-ing (thankfully I could hold my own against donators).
iM@S archive of materials.well truthfully yes it's nothing special but for some reason people on the server are all suprized by it.
yes, snipers are a great way to start farming, just get an orc archers bow and you're set :D
lumina ro has battlegrounds on which is basically team vs. team capture the flag. there's also the classic Wo E king of the hill thing.

Add me on skype! Dynamod1990I remember darkRO. Isn't that the one that had all the Jedi stuff?
Also: I am contemplating luminaRO, but I am eyeballing the high-rate more than the mid-rate. I am lazy and work, so... XD

Assuming I never played RO before what server should I start with and how should I go about getting the client and connecting to said server?
Apocalypse: Dirge Of Swans. As there are already a couple tropers there, Lumina is as good as any. RO servers have their own executives installed on top of a normal client, they usually provide links to them too. Here is Lumina's for example.
high rate servers offer a different experience than normal rate servers, because higher max level means more effort. D=.
it only takes a couple of hours to reach trans. most of the difficulty is just finding a good abbey party.
note: for those of you who want to play Lumina ro, I STRONGLY RECCOMEND the full client option. it's much easier to install if you don't know how to install ragray and client mod it.

Add me on skype! Dynamod1990Yeah, but you gotta use torrents to get the full client.
Torrents.... /masturbatorymotions

The only thing pornagraphic about torrents I find is what they do to most routers.
Apocalypse: Dirge Of Swans.Actually, I was going for torrents are crap, but for porn works too.
I don't get the torrent hate, but whatever.
has anyone joined the server?
Add me on skype! Dynamod1990I'm still thinking about it. As was mentioned (I think) socialising in voice is a big part of what I know as RO as opposed to WOW, and my English pronunciation (or rather nonpronunciation) is going to kill that.
Voice on RO? With third-party software, maybe. RO itself doesn't support that.
Yeah, third party. Team speak mostly. And it also may be just my personal experience being an unreliable statistic.

I can't say much, there. I come from console land where if I use chat at all, it's only with my own buddies in an XBL party, not in-game chat, where we more shoot the shit about whatever topic floats to the surface rather than what we're doing in the game.
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about
So I started playing a week ago and I am on what I think is "International" version of RO. (Which apparently is free to play now). How is that different from what you guys play? And how does the other version keep up to date?
Also it seems that most people make money either by vending or selling off monster drops. Which requires a Merchant (for the OC for the latter if you want to make serious zeny). I think that's bullshit. I don't want to make another character (and another ACCOUNT!) even if it's easy, because I don't believe in creating a spoof character to support my main character. If that makes me a Scrub, by all means tell me. I am open to correction.
Most of people play on emulated unlicensed servers. Amusingly, they sometimes manage to keep up better than licensed ones - for example, they have had third jobs longer than official localisations.
Other differences are their true free play - paid premiums are rare.
They also often have rates - increased amount of experience and drops from mobs. As RO is a hellishly grindy game, the change is very welcome.
Even by technical terms you aren't :D And we aren't "Stop Having Fun" Guys to tell you how to play.
Some private servers have an interesting option - autobuy. Players can leave their character to buy the listed goods at listed prices from anybody willing to sell - just perfect if you do not want to have your own vendoring merchant.

And when there are two times you more than trees... Yeah...
My friend LK farmed the moscovia dungeon 3 for 10k+ npcvend mirrors.
There was also some critter "salad farming super novice" though that one I didn't look in depths.
