I think the problem is that while accidentally shooting civilians is not a war crime, not bothering to check before shooting is.

What counts as a valid check? Because the group was armed, which is generally how you identify combatants in a war zone.

While nobody involved deserved to die, there was something insanely stupid about the decision to form an unidentified armed group in a war zone. When you form your own armed group in an active war zone you massively increase the likelihood of being mistaken for a combatant and shot.

Seriously, it's as if people just forgot the last 20 years happened.

Except the whole reason the torture happened at Gitmo was because the Justice Department wouldn’t let the CIA torture people, but the Justice Department can’t impact what happens at Gitmo.

If Assange was being handed to the US military or the CIA him being tortured would be a serious concern, but he’s being handed to the people the CIA and military hid their torture from.

I thought publicly infamous prisoners like him are isolated from the rest of the prison population to avoid incidents.

Yes, but that only prevents incidents from the general prison population. The other protected prisoners are still a risk, as are the guards.

An obviously comparison point is Epstein, as either an instance of an egotist abuser being de powered and then the duty of care to him going unfulfilled such that he was able to take his own life, or if you want to go conspiracy theorists as an instance of guard based murder.

To shift gears a moment, will Assange's trial in the U.S be an open trial or will it be behind closed doors because it involves classified information? I don't know he the U.S justice system normally handles this kind of thing.
