Yeah, I presumed that Nitori's camo didn't work either. Pretty sure that before it went off, both Marisa and Reimu could still see where she was.(Maybe not see her specifically, but they could see a blue silhouette where she was).

In fairness, the fact that she was able to make what amounts to a cloaking device, even if a faulty one, is rather impressive, considering that we can't do that ourselves, and since the kappa's tech is mostly made from reverse engineering modern human tech....

As for Shogi, I just wanted to continue my theory/running joke that she only wants to do things with humans. Because she loves humans, don't all kappas?

Kappa tech seems to be magitech. Invisibility spells aren't that impressive.

In that case, she is a failure for not even getting a "make you invisible" device right, even with magic.tongue

"So, why did you call this thing optical camouflage, again?"

"It hides you, silly."

"Really? Because it looks like it just makes this barrier around me... and if I get hit while the barrier's up, bullets are destroyed. I... don't see where the optical or camouflage part comes in."

"Okay, so the design specs might have changed slightly during development."

Clearly, Marisa is Nitori's guinea pig. Someone's gotta test that tech, and Nitori doesn't go out that often.

But Nitori tried her best to work out the kinks, because if it doesn't work, then Marisa (the human) would get hurt and Nitori would feel bad.

Although, looking at the quote, part of me wants to say that Marisa was being sarcastic.

I stumbled upon this once again and I was like "Shoot! I should have linked this while we were still discussing Nitori!"

And then I remembered we still were. So enjoy! It sucks to be friends with a race that generally hates you and doesn't live for hundreds of years.

Nitori seems to inspire a darned lot of PVs. Four others i know of offhand. And with a moments searching (There are HD versions of these, but no HD with subs I could find, so i went with subs):

Cucumber Flavored Beer, the first Touhou PV I ever watched.

Kapanet Nitori

Optical Cellophane. *

Kappa Nitori, I think this is one of the oldest PVs for Nitori.

P.S. I love Tetla Pot's style (kapanet nitori and optical cellophane).

@Tacitus: Don't worry about it, I was actually only checking in right now to see if I've still been keeping you from picdumping. I'm afraid my recovery is taking its sweet time, so as much as I adore Nitori for no adequately explained reason, I can't bring myself to spend an extended amount of time absorbing, much less delivering in an orderly fashion, ideas about her.

Wonder how much study it would take to run a basic Pixiv search...

The trick is to search danbooru and then link the source site.

Just have to hope that the source site is still up. And free of malware.

So, Safebooru. On the upside, a lot of stuff from Danbooru is on it, pre-screened, and it seems to have higher standards when it comes to art quality. Downside is that tagging and translation are both woefully inadequate.

Links are... SFW.

I may have gotten more from a 50-page search than I did from 100 Danbooru pages the other night... but I'm still missing some pics. Good pics. Hopefully they were just added later, and haven't been properly tagged yet so I can't find them with a search. Yeah, that's it.

Man, I hope not! I wish I had taken the opportunity to write my post about her when I had it... the low-down of it is that, somehow, Nitori seems to me like one of the most versatile characters of them all. Somehow, she just fits perfectly well into so many different forms, whether it's cute, or cool, or hilarious, or even sexy, or beautiful, perhaps in a melancholic sense.

I wanted to scour the entirety of Danbooru for the best examples of these and all the combinations!

Oh, I did want to say this at least.

I see Nitori and the other kappa as similar to Sons of Ether from Mage The Ascension. To them, their science makes absolute sense, but trying to explain it to anyone else leads to a tale so full of jargon no one knows what they mean. Nitori in particular has some Forces and a bit of Correspondence.

Also, Nitori's outfit seems really drag-inefficient (so many pockets), so I imagine that either the material it's made of has amazingly good water flow or magic (Or sufficiently advanced technology, I suppose) is involved. probably the latter, since Akyuu claims it's able to keep the wearer dry, and I just don't see that happening on anything with a knee-length skirt.

Also, her boots look like galoshes, which is adorable.

Thinking about it, Nitori is pretty frequently shown in other outfits, isn't she? More than most members of the cast, to my reckoning. Perhaps it's because Kappa clothing was actually commented on, so people know it's not a part of her character design, exactly? (Kind of like with the seaweed and cat teaser.)

Also, someone back when mentioned the idea that they used robots to wrassle, and I find this very amusing. Some good natured human challenges one to a wrestling match, and Nitori Busts out Hisoutensoku. Which kind of just... stands there. Slllloooooowwwwllllyyyy lifting its arm. Ok, so maybe their giant mech technology has a way to go yet.

[up]

The only one of those I don't immediately agree with is sexy. It's fully possible I just haven't seen any good fanart in that direction, though.

Bam!

Now of course, that is only one picture by an amazing artist, but (just doing some quick searches) everyone loves a tomboyish machine lover.

She also owns a nontrivial share of the "touhou swimsuit" combination on Danbooru. And she actually has an outfit that emphasizes her breasts!

Also, NSFW TMI etc warning: She has a surprisingly high percentage of porn pictures in which she's actually genuinely into it. Doing a Challenge Picdump for her would be unusually pleasant!

I still like the idea that the kappa are "playing" scientist the same way tengu are playing newspaper. They are excellent engineers and builders, but they make things because it's fun, not because it has any sort of scientific use or because it would improve living. Because of this, I see kappa society as being kinda lopsided technology wise, they live mostly in old fashion huts and caves; cooking things over an open fire and such, but also have things like robots or jetpacks or spring shoes, because the kappas though those things would be fun to make and play around with. If that makes sense.

As for Nitori, I was going to write a minific, but then I forgot what I was going to write about before I started. I want to do one though, but I am out of practice, and don't have PMiSS to fact check with. if anyone cares

Watery Depths of the Mind

A clatter of pieces on a board signaled the end of a drawn out battle between. a girl with white wolf's ears, Momiji Inubashiri, and her opponent, the kappa Nitori Kawashiro.

"Another win! Well, you remember the bet, right?"

Momiji smiled lightly towards her opponent.

Nitori looked downwards and then fumbled around with the straps she always wore, removing the key she had clasped in the strings.

"You wanna know about this old thing, huh?"

Nitori flipped the bit of metal end over end in her fingers as she focused.

"... So congratulations, children! Your first inventions have been made, and you have all earned your plates and shells!"

An elderly kappa, known only as Head Director of the Occasional Major Team Project, or simply The Head, walked to a rank-and-file lineup of the recently successful inventors. Standing at the front of them was Nitori, who was handed her reinforced backpack and cap, both of which felt rigid in her hands.

Must be made with some kinda rustproof metal...

The ceremony was short, ending with all the now fully-fledged inventors tossing their caps into the air, a lightly metallic noise ringing out when they hit the smooth stones of the riverbank.

All except Nitori's, who had caught her gear in her Extending Arm invention.

"Kawashiro, come see your old granny in a bit, huh?"

The Head turned towards her granddaughter and smiled, then returned to her below-ground office.

Nitori got through her obligatory congratulations and followed shortly thereafter.

"Um, Gramma?..."

"Ah, there you are, Neeters! Sorry that I had to call you back here, but, you know, old-school formalities and whatzits. Anywho, this is a super-special time for you and me both!"

The Head produced a small key from her desk, looped it through some thick black strings, and tossed it to her Granddaughter.

"Since you finished your gadget in less than a year- And not at all because you're the cutest, sweetest widdle granddaughter a kappa could ask for- You've scored yourself a fancy little trophy right there! It makes a marvelous fashion statement!"

Nitori blinked in confusion.

"... Why a key?"

"Beats me! So does the title you get with it."

"Title?"

"SUPER YOUKAI WARHEAD!"

Nitori clasped her hands to her face.

Years later, Nitori had started watching venturing downstream to study humans- She had always found them so fascinating, even if she was scared witless of being seen by one. But as she swam downstream, her key came loose of the straps securing it.

"Murmf!?"

As the bubbles from her panicked underwater shout rose to the surface, a woman walking down the bank with a large jug labeled "From the Source" spotted the pair.

She put down her jug and ran after the key, scooping it up from the water.

Nitori's eye's would've watered if she weren't already submerged- Her top-of-her-class marking had been lost...

The kappa huddled into a ball and sulked, floating down the current, wherever it would take her. She was a strong swimmer, and could get back home when she was done moping.

*THUNK*

Ouch. Stupid rock. No, wait. Different sound. Fine then. Stupid jar.

Jar.

Full of water!

Nitori looked upwards from her stopping point.

The woman from earlier smiled and handed Nitori her key.

Then she left.

"Hmmm. Well, that explains why you're always trying to work out the bugs in your camo, then. You're really fond of humans, huh?"

"Yes. I saw what lay in the heart of must humans that day- She didn't run or try to kill me. She saw me for what I was."

"And yet you're still too shy to just walk up to them?"

"I'm a kappa- It'd be like you not wagging your tail when you're happy."

"One last question, then."

The Mountain Guard's ears were slightly out of alignment.

The kappa raised an eyebrow.

"Yes?"

"Why did you constantly refer to yourself in the third person?"

What the hell was ZUN drinking when he created Nitori's title, anyway?

I thought that was a rather interesting little story. I admit, I do kinda disagree on "school/class for inventors" or such, but that's just my own interpretation of the kappa.

I liked how you tied Nitori's fondness towards humans into the story.
