Come to think of it, I don't think fandom has ever contested elf eared Parsee, to my knowledge at least. So in this case, they do count the ZUN art? (although Ragdoll Parsee is still pretty bleh)

Anyway Cirno. She has an ice sword. I like to think she made it herself, and took all day doing it and is just so proud of it.

The thing is, ZUN can't draw ears. When he tries to, they look either deformed or elven, but, for whatever reason, Parsee's elf ears stuck, and, the occasional, usually older work featuring Aya aside, she's the only one who canonically has pointy ears.

According to the card descriptions, Cirno can make all kinds of weapons out of ice, but the sword is the only one she's figured out how to use. Therefore, her house must have a perma-cold Wall of Weapons in it.

Advent Cirno

Double Spoiler had pointy-eared Aya. It's actually a recent development.

Sometimes I wonder if all youkai are meant to have pointy ears, but ZUN's never had the confidence to show us ears until recently.

I mean from where she actually got that sword in Advent Cirno.

I would assume Letty because she's the Zack Expy in it but I have yet to read it.

Some doujins portray, Daiyousei as also having pointy ears. So maybe the other fairies have pointy ears as well.

I wonder if ZUN was/is going for "youkai have elf ears" kinda like how demons have elf ears in Disgaea.

Also, Advent Cirno clearly took a big ol watermelon, carved it up with her icesword, then put the biggest slice on a bladehandle </hasnocluewhatheistalkingabout>

Notice how, unlike every other ear-relevant portriat, Orin is standing in a 3/4 profile, rather than a forward-facing shot.

If I must, I'll put it this way; *ahem*- When ZUN tries to draw ears from a forward-facing view, they almost always look either deformed or elven.

Not every possible level, surely. It would be silly on every possible level if he insisted that his bedside table were Fawriel, who was a magician youkai and also the planet Neptune. This is just run-of-the-mill silly, one or two levels deep.

As far as I know, Cirno does not have pointy ears.

''Because Cirno-chan is the Strongest'' is amazingly good. I'm particularly fond of how it expands Cirno's motives for being strong. And Letty is all dark and mysterious and really, really cool in it.

Heck, it's why I consider Dai a wind fairy.

Although there's very brief Anime Anatomy Daiyousei nudity. So this is a warning about that. Better safe than sorry ,I figure.

There are, of course, variants of Cirno. The most famous is probably "Advent Cirno," because why not I guess.

Another is "Achi Cirno," a fiery recolor of our favorite ice fairy. If the Fawriel Cirnodynamic Theorem has some truth, perhaps the heat energy from Cirno's freezing feeds Achi Cirno and vice-versa. Or maybe there's an entire elemental spectrum of other Cirnos out there.

And finally there's Cirno-nee, an older, scarfed, confident, aloof, and frequently heterochromatic Cirno often tied to the Scarlet Devil Mansion. Apparently there's a story behind her, but I'm unfamiliar with it.

I also suggest The Fairies of the Lake by Winter Scenery. Basically, its tough being the strongest. It alienates your friends who just can't understand that YOU LOVE BEING STRONG! Also, Nitori gets Cirno to help her build a giant robot. Comes in three chapters.

A couple things:

The yama warned Cirno that "You are a fairy, however, you possess great power. But because of that, you often stray from and misclaim your territory. At this rate, you might receive damage that cannot be healed naturally." Getting "she's powerful enough she's going to become a youkai" out of that seems like a stretch to me

There's several spellcards and a shot-type based on frogs exploding. Cirno freezing them is probably partially self-defence. The things are the Voltorbs of Gensoukyou

Well, if she loses her immortality and stops being a fairy, what else would she be other than a youkai? She's not going to turn into a human, certainly. Although yes, the losing of fairy privileges has more to do with what she does with her power rather than the power itself. She's too independent and wander-y, when I suppose fairies are closely tied to their homes.

Speaking of themes, does Paradise~Deep Mountain count as one of hers? Because she's the midboss of that stage.
