[up][up] Thankfully, they are so very incompetent.

That's how Gensokyo rolls. The blood-thirsty ones are incompetent, the dangerous ones are lazy or polite.

Patchy, who might I add is a sickly wizard, is more reliable than nine tailed fox Ran? (I'll give you Chen) If anything, I'd say that Ran is the only person who may know the ritual who would be able to respond in a timely manner should the oni decide to come up for air.

I know people see Ran as basically (and only) Chen and Yukari's babysitter, but give her more credit than that.

[up]Doesn't that imply that she could handle practically anything? I mean, those aren't the easiest people to babysit.

But it's true that there are very few who portray her as an actually respectable and powerful kitsune...poor thing...

So, if I throw beans at Yuugi while shouting that Oni have no place being [[Insert Wherever Here]], will that burn her or something?

Still, she is limited by Yukarin's desires. If she acts without Yukari's approval, she's much weaker.

Ran's still powerful in her own right. When fought in Perfect Cherry Blossom, she's without Yukari's influence and is still an EX Boss. She implies at one point that under Yukari's orders she's as powerful as Yukari.

[up][up][up] I'll bet that doing that is a surefire way to earn the oni's emnity.

An explanation I heard is that the roasted beans symbolize humanity's deceit which is why onis don't like it. Humans are throwing beans like they're sowing seeds but the beans are cooked so won't grow. Its a potent dishonest symbol and it makes onis very sad.

Huh. The whole holiday of Setsubon is a big "fuck you" to onis/Suika since she's the only one on the surface. Also, the Scarlet sisters since ZUN vampires have the bean weakness too.

All ZUN Youkai (or rather, all his supernaturals) have some symbolic weakness or another. Which ones he chooses to reveal is another story.

Well, that goes back to mythology. Most monsters in myths had some kind of weakness otherwise how would our plucky mythological heroes beat them?

Better than the Greek mythologies weaknesses.

Yuugi~Careless Celebrator

In a world cut off from the light, there is no law. In darkness, authority comes through power and power alone. When the oni decided to go underground, they became the rulers of a world beneath the world. With a ruling class of drunkards, the Former Capitol needed a leader, someone who will mobilize the oni and restore the city to its former grandeur.

Yuugi isn't a leader. She is simply strong beyond imagination and simple in her thoughts. She's not enough.

Though she is one of the Four Devas, among the strongest youkai in existence, she is still an oni, and an oni is little more than a party animal. No oni works. No oni trains. No oni denies the carefree lifestyle that characterizes them (to do so would be to become a hermit). They just are, by virtue (vice) of their strength and will. The only reason that Yuugi takes care of the evil spirits is because she doesn't find it stressing. To actually work is beyond her comprehension.

The spirit of the sake dish never leaves her. Every minute, every waking moment, she hears the pouring of wine and the sound of laughter, the party which she is always invited to. The rest of the world is mere distraction.

I thought my last write-up was too optimistic. So I wrote this to balance it out.

Nice summary, but I feel compelled to point out that laziness is apparently the standard attitude for Gensokyo's residents, possibly because the place was set up by someone who spends half the year asleep.

Granted, there are a few hard working inhabitants (Marisa, Sakuya, and Ran as a Youkai example), but mostly folks seem to want to avoid work as much as is physically possible, unless they REALLY love what they do (like Aya).

Ho hum....I can't really think about anything else to say about Yuugi. She's an oni. She's awesome. She can beat you literally single handedly. She is skilled at not spilling drinks...

That's about it, really.

... We're talking about Yuugi, right? 'Cause I've been gone for a while. Anyway...

i think yuugi is a pretty cool guy, eh wont drop sake and doesnt afraid of anything. [/meme]

In all seriousness, I've been unexpectedly pulled away from my compy, and thus haven't written my writeup yet. It'll be up today, however.

I haven't decided between a continuation of Princess or an alternate timeline bit involving my oni-chain theory. Hmm...

Oni Legend

"... And so, we will hold a feast, celebrating the fellowship between us, the residents of the Human Village, and you,the Oni of the Mountain. Of course, the four young Devas will have a place of honor, as will the daughter of the Village Chief, our beloved princess, Kotohime. Will you accept?"

Big Boss Hoshiguma, of course, had every intention of agreeing, but had to ensure one thing... "Well, I dunno..."

"Of course, there will be plenty of sake. In fact, Morichika has claimed that she has obtained a gourd of Eight Purification Sake, said to be enough to have made even Orochi drunk. Compliments of the Chief, of course."

"Deal!" The Big Boss was VERY impressed. "I'll make sure the whole crew'll show! This'll be great! Thanks, bro. We'll see ya there!" And with that, Boss Hoshiguma flew off to Youkai Mountain, to tell his people of the wonderful party the Humans were throwing for them. As blunt as he could be, the Boss, as with all oni, loved to party, and would find any excuse to do so, especially after that pointless visit to the bridge he headed, and the strange girl who lived there. Why did it bother him so much, even though it was all those years ago...

The Boss told his people; they got excited. After a month of nearly breaking down into tears, the oni arrived at the Human Village. And with that, the party began. The food was good. The sake was plentiful, and the Four Devas of the Mountain and the princess of the Village had clearly become friends. And as Kotohime chated with Konngara and Kasen, Suika and Yuugi enjoyed the Eight Purification Sake, and grew very intoxicated from it. The others, having seen how potent it was, also drank of it, and grew just as drunk. Kotohime was worried, and tried to tell the humans, but was always told "Oh, that's just how oni are." But Kotohime was very concerned; Kasen, Konngara, Suika, and Yuugi all seemed quite lucid until they drank that sake.

Of course, this was all part of the plan, though the young princess was not aware. "Chief. The oni are all completely drunk. Your plan is working! Soon, we will be rid of these dangerous beasts, and our lands will be free of all real threats to the Village!" The story was chanted in different ways to the Chief by every single human, spare his own daughter, the only human child present.

Kotohime, however, was very worried. All of her new friends had suddenly fallen unconscious! Why is this happening?!? How?!? HOW?!? Why is everything going wrong? Why aren't they laughing and having fun together?

"Why is everything going WRONG?!?" Kotohime was screaming at the top of her lungs. She was so sad.

"They were a potential threat." It was the Chief. He was leading the others through the pathway through the Village, towards the Misty Lake. "Now that we are getting rid of them, we will be much safer. Be happy, Kotohime! Be happy!"

As the Chief moved out of the way, the crowd following him brought along behind them. The oni were all shackled, and many were still unconscious, getting dragged along the ground. At the end of the line were the Four Devas, as well as Yuugi's grandfather, the Big Boss. Kotohime ran forward, and tried to free them. She managed to wake up the Big Boss, and he gave a small smile.

"RAGGHHHHGGHHH! EVERYONE WAKE UP! EVERYONE!! WE WERE DECEIVED! WAKE UP!!" The Boss screamed and called, and soon, all the oni were awake, though some were quite groggy. They all broke free of the chains, and ran. They ran and ran and ran. Soon, they found themselves in a strange place; an immense mouth to an immense cave; the very cave that the Big Boss had built that bridge in. It was a hard decision, and it took many days, but the oni had decided to move into the vast underground, to escape the treachery of Man. There was but one disinter; Kasen had run away upon hearing the plan, and none knew where she could have gone. However, they could not stop for just one oni, as hard as it was to leave her.

Yuugi, Suika and Konngara lead the group down below, as fast as they could, over the bridge and down further still, neither seeing nor meeting anyone on the way down. Yuugi figured as much; Gramps always told strange stories, and the bridge girl was no different. At last, they arrived to a small town, seemingly out of place amongst the surroundings. And stranger still were the inhabitants; youkai that swung on spider webs and youkai that dwelt in buckets. However, none of the onicared much, and happily introduced themselves to the outcast youkai.

"...And that's the story of how we all arrived in the Underground, and why we all wear these shackles. We must never forget the reason we got here." Yuugi was telling a story to the oni children who had been born into the Underground, a place of music and colors and endless parties. "We must never forget the hardships that we went through as a people, especially those like my gramps, who gave ever ounce of his strength to build the Underground into the wonderful place it is today!"

One little oni girl rose to her feet, and confronted Yuugi, the current Big Boss, with a sharp comment, "Why didn't Boss Hoshiguma try to destroy those lying humans? I sure think that they deserved it!"

"Now, now, we must also never forget that it was a human who saved us from that same treachery. Kotohime was strong, if not in body, then in spirit. So, we must always honor the strong, and the earnest. Now then, I have a party to attend to! I'll see you kids around in a couple of weeks."

Yuugi thought back to the day of the invite, from none other than Satori herself! A... certain group of youkai were to be invited over to the Palace of Earth Spirits, and they had a slot open. Yuugi was given the extra invite, and thought and thought about who to give it to. Satori visited one day, and told her the same story her grandfather had told her. Yuugi, of course, settled it right then and there, who she would invite. She told Satori to bring everyone else who would attend along, and, as she saw them approach, she grabbed the pickax of the Big Boss, and silently grinned.

"This is gonna be fun!" The oni thought to herself, "or my name ain't Yuugi Hoshiguma!"

... Another piece of BS I threw together in two hours in the middle of the night. Why am I not surprised?
