Well, you're an Italian now. How about uniting Italy?

It's technically united already. Lombardy still exists despite it being past 1000...Doesn't really seem like it's close to breaking up, either.

I don't think I can do that in 400 years XD

Really what I'm most salty about is that I put all that work into Wessex to the point where I earned a fuckload of money a month and had really heavily developed the provinces, and now I can't trust that they'll stay with my House because I'm playing someone different and leaving a computer-controlled person in charge.

Eh, it's possible to do that in 400 years, but you'd need to get into the Byzantine Empire I think.

In my latest Stellaris run, I'm playing fanatic materialist authoritarian newts with a syncretic follower race. We went south and found a three-nation hegemony Federation, then went north and found a criminal syndicate. Cue me winning over the hegemony to the point they invited me in, then I managed to get them to see science as the way forward, took over the Hegemony myself in 2240, and then dragged the syndicate kicking and screaming into our Federation.

Welcome to the Greater Dominion!

Well, I think I can give up any hope of attempting to be independent or anything. Lots of empires and kingdoms spreading around right now and I'm back down to only having Wessex as a duchy after a short but eventful period in Italy.

Lombardy's become the Holy Roman Empire, the Umayyads have control over both Spain and a significant portion of France, Scandinavia is a Fylkirate, there's a Welsh kingdom that controls both Wales and the vast majority of Ireland, and Byzantium is slowly creeping up the Italian peninsula.

At this point I've really given up any hope of doing anything notable and I guess I"ll just settle in for the remaining 353 or so years and see how this ends.

There are almost certainly ways for you to gain power even in those circumstances. Does one of those nations have inheritance laws that permit female inheritance? Marry a daughter of the ruler, then assassinate all of her brothers. Once she is #1 in succession, kill off the current ruler. When successful, it can give you the nation in 2 generations.

I am back to playing CK2, doing the most recent Monarch Journey (as the Khitan). First time seriously playing as Nomads, I quite dislike how their mechanics are set up, but it is quite fun. I was taking my time conquering the steps and kinda, uh, forgot the Mongols were a thing. Got caught completely unaware during a way, thought it was the end of me. Fortunately the Nomads are as OP as I've been told and, even though I was massively outnumbered, I still managed to win decisively almost every battle and killed Temujin himself. That made me realize just how stupidly powerful I truly am and how slow I've been going. I've been pacing myself due to defensive pacts, but I guess I could just go and take on a whole lot of people at once without much issue.

Not sure if the Welsh kingdom will have that though xD

Plus I'm not independent, still an HRE vassal despite two different attempts at a war of independence.

That means the HRE are protecting you. Build up your forces, forge some claims, and see if you can't do some damage to the neighbors then. Or do some marrying around the lower ranking HRE vassals and build up some land on the continent for extra forces and try to be Wilhelm the Conquerer.

Paradox opens a new grand strategy studio

Paradox Interactive is spreading to Spain with the opening of a new studio, Paradox Tinto, in Barcelona. It's focusing on Europa Universalis 4, one of the best strategy games on PC, taking the reins from Paradox Development Studio, but will be eventually moving onto new grand strategy games.

When I first started covering Paradox a decade ago, it just had the one studio, PDS, but through acquisitions and the creation of new studios that number has jumped up to seven. The most recent acquisitions were Age of Wonders developer Triumph Studios and Battle Tech's Harebrained Schemes.

PDS creative director and designer of Europa Universalis 4 Johan Andersson will be leading the new team as studio manager.

"I am excited and grateful for this opportunity to build up a new studio in a new location, putting the knowledge accumulated through the decades of building games and development studios into good use,” said Andersson. "My goal is to assemble a team and create a fully functional studio to keep on developing the Europa Universalis brand, and later design and develop new grand strategy games."

There are no hints yet about what these new grand strategy games could be, and if they'll be brand new or follow-ups to earlier games, say Victoria 2 perhaps? It launched in 2010, and for years now every Paradox game tease is followed by people predicting that, finally, it will be Victoria 3. Maybe one day they will be right.

Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.

Ah, so a studio entirely dedicated to developing Grand Strategy then? Could be good.

They've got a couple codenamed projects in the works, it's possible that they're moving one or more of them alongside EU. Also I noticed that the Paradox announcements on facebook talked about EU, not EU 4, I wouldn't be surprised if we see EU 5 as the first big thing to come out of Paradox Tinto.

I also hope they have some fun with their dev clashes, studio clash sounds rather interesting.

Not anytime soon, I think, they have a major DLC coming out for EU 4 this week.

Yeah and there’s been speculation that similar to CK 2 having a huge DLC before C K3s production ramped up something similar might be happening with EU 4.

They have confirmed that there’s more work coming on EU 4 after this DLC, but we don’t know the size or scope of it yet.

I highly doubt that anything else will come from CK 2 considering it’s releasing at the very beginning of September.

Double-posting, but another update. After the Holy Roman Empire lost in a Crusade, they were weakened enough that me and a few other nobles were allowed to leave when we formed an Independence faction. Right now, my priorities are to start expanding again, if I can get a fucking Chancellor that can give me claims properly.

Ramidel Since: Jan, 2001

[up]Relying on your chancellor to get claims is paying retail. You need to marry obscure claimants to big titles.

In my Wales game waaay back when, I married Sweyn Forkbeard's daughter and crowned her Queen of England. Then when she was losing an excommunication war, I murdered her to make way for our son and heir, because this is CKII.

I don't want big titles now though. The only options I have at this point are to conquer, especially since a significant portion of Central England is under the control of the Umayyads.
