The series isn't being invalidated, according to the staff, but the sequel apparently isn't flowing from there. So they exist in parallel.

It turns out to be that Nunally In Wonderland spin-off.

Code Geass Nightmare of Nunnally showed there were multiple universes in the world of Code Geass.

Now that the third and final of the new Code Geass movies has been released (in Japanese theaters), it's a good opportunity to address the great debate which has surrounded the anime for over a decade: Lelouch, dead or alive?

For those who are unaware, there are several fan theories which assume that Lelouch has gained immortality at the end of the show and thus survived his death. But is this theory what actually happened or is it tinfoil? Therefore a compilation of all the information we have has been made: all the official statements, from old interviews to very recent tweets, the official guide book, live commentaries, the new epilogue from the official ZR movie blu-ray, etc. Additionally, code theory's points have been scrutinized to see how they hold up against these official statements and against the anime itself.

The resulting text is quite large, as there is a lot of official information about Lelouch's fate, and code theory has a lot of various points, and the compilation text is as thorough and complete as possible. The text is, however, well worth reading for all Code Geass fans. You can find the full text here

For those who want a TLDR:

- Lelouch has been officially confirmed dead many, many times

- There have been interviews where the creators have explicitly denied some key points of code theory

- Code theory is contradicted by the anime itself as it violates the lore of the anime.

As an example I'll copy the creators' tweets here:

- "Before I started writing the story of a person called Lelouch, I confirmed with Taniguchi-director something. That thing was that the end of Lelouch will be death."

- "At least he is aware of his sins and pays for them with his death."

- "This man called Lelouch will pay for his sins by his death. The story follows him till he finally make this decision."

- "Probably this Lelouch we see in the first episode of the series wouldn't choose death. He would try something to avoid it. He couldn't die, for Nunnally as well. But we see him changed in the last episode."

A screenshot of the tweets

The translation of the tweets

I do, however, strongly recommend reading the full text, as it has all the argumentation and sources.

And finally, regarding the sequel which is confirmed to follow the new movies and not the original series: it is true that the sequel is an AU, however it is important to note that Lelouch's fate is unaltered in the movies, Zero requiem still happens and he still dies, the changes in the movies are not directly related to Lelouch himself, and thus these statements about R2's ending are still very much relevant.

So let me get this straight.

  • Hey Lelouch died in R2 so shut up about it
  • But the new movies are doing their own thing and R3 is happening
  • But Lelouch was still initially dead before R3 so shut your face

So, in short, R3 is really a movie set in an alternate universe of Code Geass.

Wow, it really is likely they are just making shit up to make C.C look cool or something.

That is so fucking weird that its just a single movie.

Like almost every anime movie series I see comes in multiple installments.

Alternate Universe is brought up in Knightmare of Nunally. How her world is an alternate of normal Geass.

Also I knew that spoiler for awhile so I'm surprised no one else knew.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.

I fear the new project will only be about Lelouch and his two loyal hands.

That depends, but the new movie probably won't be too short in running time. They do have a lot of mecha staff listed in the credits of the PV, so characters like Kallen and company will likely get to participate in events.

Frankly, so far there's not a huge practical difference between the two versions of the story (the original TV series and the compilation movies) when you look at the big picture. The modifications are all in details, not the grand scheme of things.

They're just two versions of the same basic plot with something like 80-90% of shared content. There are changes and cuts, but the conclusion of the "Emperor Lelouch" storyline was almost exactly the same in the third movie.

So the real purpose of calling this :"alternate universe", I would say, was simply allowing people to choose whether or not they want to count the upcoming sequel as part of the story or treat it as something separate. In other words, the point is to let you stick with the old show while not eliminating a parallel path forward. Like if this was a visual novel.

The director did say there is going to be a single movie called "Resurrection" and I suppose that will presumably be a self-contained chapter with a distinct beginning and end, but...I wouldn't bet that will be the last Code Geass anime, especially if it performs well enough.

Now, to address the actual content of the new teaser trailer...that strange unknown character seems vaguely familiar.

He reminds me of the Geass-related folks we briefly saw at a few points during the story, back in the TV show, whenever they displayed this still image of a bunch of people with closed eyes and Geass marks on their cheeks.

They were never explicitly described. We don't know if they were Code holders, Geass users, members of the cult or something else, so maybe this new guy will clear up that loose end. Hmm...the visor might suggest he's blind, perhaps? Is that why everyone in that old shot was shown with their eyes closed?

C.C. is up to something as well. It's interesting that whoever is attacking her in that temple or location seems to be wearing the same clothes or ones in the same style.

The reveal of it being in an alternate universe, while a bit of a cop-out, is absolutely the right thing to do. Since it means S1 and S2 of CG can be unaffected by this new stuff.

The wording on the event invitations from the third movie suggests that C.C. is going on a quest to revive Lelouch.

Also notable is that the new promotional image has C.C. holding a bloody knife, the sheath of which is also visible on her new outfit, so she's probably going to get into a knife fight at some point.

Well there being a universe where Lelouch is dead and a universe where he possibly isn't is still an annoying Flip Flop Of God.

They're just two versions of the same basic plot with something like 80-90% of shared content. There are changes and cuts, but the conclusion of the "Emperor Lelouch" storyline was almost exactly the same in the third movie.

...so then Lelouch still "died?"

So the real purpose of calling this :"alternate universe", I would say, was simply allowing people to choose whether or not they want to count the upcoming sequel as part of the story or treat it as something separate

If I was the person in charge of funding this project and the writers came to me with this I would slap the sh-t out of them and tell them to go back to the drawing board. Then I'd be fired for mistaking the storyboarders for the script writers. But it'd be worth it.

In other words, the point is to let you stick with the old show while not eliminating a parallel path forward. Like if this was a visual novel.

Considering I hate Fatestaynight with it's 3 versions of the same friggin story    I am not pleased   .

[up] Uh Fate doesn’t have 3 versions of the same story.

It has 3 routes that each tell a different story.

Unlimited Blade Works & Heaven’s Feel are two completely different beasts from each other.

@Soble:

I meant that Lelouch is still supposed to be dead in the movies right now and the word "resurrection" goes along with this.

After all, you usually can't be revived if you're not already dead. Generally speaking.

Probably creepy as f**k, but the conversation needs to be segwayed somehow.
