  • Harsher in Hindsight: As Errant Signal explains, while the main game came out in the spring of 2020 and showed the people in power ignoring the problem, profiting from it, and devoting resources into a futile effort that merely looked good, it ended on more of a wistful note. The Macro DLC came out in November and shows those same issues more explicitly, also depicting class stratification and police violence, as the creator became much more frustrated.
  • Tear Jerker: In the Walled City, you can find dozens of murals, shrines and monuments dedicated to those who died to the aliens, which serves as a sobering reminder that these people had lives to live and people who cherished them, rather than just being numbers in a ballooning death toll.
  • The Woobie: From what we learn about them, the Peace Sentinel pilots have it rough: they're largely ordinary teens and young adults plucked off the streets and put behind the controls of a mech (with seemingly very little training, if the accounts regarding their disastrous field performance are anything to go off of), which would be bad enough, but they're pretty much in a lose-lose situation - if they stay loyal, there's a high chance they'll be killed in combat by the aliens, but if they dare to break rank they risk having their loved ones imprisoned by the UN and held captive until they fall back in line.
