- Fridge Brilliance: While telling Thomas off for his mishap in the mine, Sir Topham Hatt appears to be laughing at him. On the surface, this comes off as dickish, especially since Thomas breaks down crying and apologizing to Sir Topham Hatt. However, consider that the story this episode was based on was in turn inspired by at least two real events where an engine fell into a hole and disappeared, one of them with the engine's driver. Sir Topham Hatt may well be laughing with relief that Thomas got off easy.
- Informed Wrongness: Thomas' misbehaviour at the mines was less immoral and more ignorant. While he really was an idiot for thinking he could go past a "DANGER" board with no repercussions, the board does not explain why "engines must not pass", and there is no visual cue aboveground that the mines' roofs are not strong enough to withstand an engine's weight, especially since trucks are light enough to go past the board no problem. If Thomas had known what the problem was, he likely would not have disobeyed the board.
