YMMV / The X-Files S05 E13 "Patient X"

  • Informed Wrongness: It is evident that the audience is supposed to see Jeffrey Spender from Mulder's perspective, as an adversarial Obstructive Bureaucrat, and sympathize with Mulder when he takes an instant dislike to him. But from a more objective perspective, Spender is at this point not knowingly working for the Syndicate or even really aware of their existence yet, so here he is by all means just a regular FBI agent trying to do the job he has been asked by his superiors to do. And the incident that triggers Mulder's dislike of him, is merely him demanding that he leaves his mother alone. But it is hard to see this reaction from Spender as anything else than a son trying to protect his disabled and traumatized parent from something that would upset and agitate her, and by this point in the show Mulder has repeatedly proven that tactfulness and sensitivity aren't exactly his strong suits.
