• Even Better Sequel: Is sometimes said to be this due to expanding the world and themes of the original MST trilogy.
• Moral Event Horizon: Pasevalles crosses it when he murders his lover, Princess Idela, on the suspicion that she might have read an incriminating letter.
  • In "Into the Narrowdark" we learn that he actually crossed his MEH years before by killing Josua - if indeed he did.
• Nightmare Fuel: Hakatri's resurrection by Utuk'ku's sorcerors at the end of Empire of Grass.
• Trapped by Mountain Lions: Miriamele's captivity ties into the overall plot by showing us that Utuk'ku is whispering in the minds of the Tinukeda'ya. Beyond that, though, it's mostly a way to keep Simon from learning she's alive before he has to ride to war.
