• Fair for Its Day: The book's portrayal of Phyllis is quite impressive; she's shown repeatedly to be the smarter member of the marriage, and she competently holds down her own career without ever a peep of protest from husband Mike. (While the best thing he can find to say about the far more typical Tuny is that she's "decorative.")
• Nightmare Fuel: The biotank attack that Mike and Phyllis witness features dozens of humans being snared by the tanks' webbing-blasts and carted off dead and injured into the sea. Mike ends up literally having nightmares about it, and has to seek professional help.
