• Squick:
  • That old man asking one of Esperanza's little friends (little as in twelve-ish) for a kiss in that story about the shoes. What's worse, it's noted that she seems to be considering it (he offers her a dollar).
  • Esperanza and her friends are just kids, so they probably thought of it an innocent “go kiss Grandpa.” That’s probably why he went after such young girls in the first place.
• Tear Jerker: "Red Clowns." any time she talks about wanting a new home.
  • Anything having to do with Sally.
  • The death of Angel.
  • The symbolism behind windows and women.
• The Woobie: Poor, poor Sally. She tries to leave her father, who hits her, only to wind up married to a man who hits her even worse than the first.
