YMMV / The Evil Eye

  • Base-Breaking Character: Belladonna. This should not be surprising given her nature as a Villain Protagonist who is generally meant to be disliked. That being said, her tendency to complain and moan about her life despite having, by lion stands, everything and all the aid and support she could ever need and want did not exactly. Additionally has the respect and love of her fellow Outsiders and even Kiara's family and cubs yet refuses any help and clings to Zira's lies and her own delusions, despite knowing Zira was too far gone and simply a vengeful fanatic. Many are irritated by these tendencies while others can feel some sympathy for her because of her rough childhood and how Zira's goals were one of the only things that made her feel special and kept her going, despite how depraved they are. Once Belladonna started plotting to murder Kiara's three innocent cubs, who look up to Belladonna like an aunt, this debate became much more heated, with one side beginning to outright hate Belladonna in the way one might a The Scrappy while another side noted how she is supposed to be a villain in the first place and is thus intentionally not meant to be fully likable.
  • Catharsis Factor: After all of her delusions, self-pity, and twisted logic, as well as her plot and attempt to murder Kiara's cubs (who Belladonna practically helped raise!), it was deliciously cathartic to see Belladonna finally get caught, implied to have been beaten up a bit offscreen, likely by Vitani, and get grilled and at her trial and called out on her delusions about Zira and faulty logic behind her attempted murder of the cubs (i.e. carrying out Zira's vendetta despite knowing it to be wrong and twisted). Highlights include Kiara actually slapping Belladonna when she tried to claim Zira's death means Belldonna gets to murder the cubs, in what is an epic *Shut Up, Hannibal! moment.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: A minor example, but Kiara's three cubs are generally considered cute and an endearing part of the cast.
  • The Scrappy: A weird case where it's the protagonist. She was mostly a Base-Breaking Character initially, as explained above, but as the comic went on and Belladonna began plotting to murder Kiara's three cubs, more and more people started condemning Belladonna. Although she is meant to be a villain and not truly sympathetic, many find her constant complaining and moping annoying. Other commonly cited complaints Belladonna's tendency to cling to the delusional worldview Zira implanted in her out of stubbornness, her ignoring or rejecting everything good she is graced with (great quality of life in pride lands, love of friends and Kiara's family, trust, etc.), rejecting attempts by the other lionesses to help her through her problems, and lacking any of the charisma that Scar or Zira had that made them enjoyable to watch. The aforementioned cub murder plot is likely what sealed her fate as The Scrappy; besides it being detestable on principle, the fact that said cubs loved Belladonna like an aunt, Belladonna beating one of them up, and said cubs being considered endearing by the audience to the point of Ensemble Dark Horse did not bode well for Belladonna's perception. Not helped by the fact that, when on trial, Belldonna tries to rationalize her actions with the insane and idiotic claim that Zira's death justifies her trying to murder said, children.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: The main premise of the comic, as evidenced by the summary on the poster/cover on Deviantart, is that Belladonna gets exiled from the Pridelands and joins up with a pride of villainous lions from there. However, much of the first half of the comic is a back story of telling Belladonna's earlier life and later attempts to live in the Pridelands. By the 120th page, the comic has still not even gotten to the main premise, and Belladonna is still only in the middle of her scheme.
