• Platonic Writing, Romantic Reading: Due to Byron being described as "loving" Jasper and calling him his "angel" like Annabelle before him, a sizeable amount of fans thought that Byron was in love with Jasper despite their relation; while Byron is homosexual, his love for Jasper is meant to be as a father figure.
• Tear Jerker: "Annabelle's Lament", a song that comes after Jasper finally communicates that he doesn't want to be alive anymore. It's all about her lamenting what could have been if she'd not focused only on her studies to the exclusion of a real life. In the context of the opera it's her understanding it's too late for her to "have" Jasper now, and she needs to let him go no matter how much it hurts.
• The Woobie: Annabelle McAlistair; many fans feel sorry for her because she's noted as having an abusive, friendless upbringing, she's forced to let go of her one chance at happiness with Jasper as well as abandon her entire life's work, and she's implied to ultimately die young. She's also more sympathetic than Edgar in that she put Jasper out of his misery when she realized he was miserable.
