YMMV / The Adventures of Prudence Prim

Go To

  • Values Dissonance:
    • November 22, 1925: While out on a walk, Prudence is offered a ride home by a total stranger. She hops in a taxicab to escape his advances and the stranger follows her home, and waiting outside her residence and hoping to make her acquaintance. This is treated as a romantic gesture rather than an incidence of stalking.
    • January 3, 1926: Prudence nearly suffers a nasty fall while hiking too close to a crumbling cliff. Her rescuer demands a kiss after saving her from danger, ignoring Prudence's vehement protests and planting one on her without consent. The text goes out of its way to describe how Prudence enjoys the kiss and the scene is painted as the romantic conclusion to the strip: a swooning Prudence held tightly in her rescuer's arms, gazing up at him with half-lidded eyes against a picturesque mountain backdrop. Modern viewers would be more likely to view this as assault.
A young man caught her in his arms and drew her close to him.
"Don't, don't!" she cried. "I'm Prudence, and my family name is Prim!"
"Indeed! Well my name's Conquest, and I can tell you, Miss,
I rescued you from danger, and— I deserve a kiss!"
And, though she paled in terror and gasped with sudden fright,
He kissed her so successfully she trembled with delight.
