- Angst Aversion: And not only to people who don't want to see a "depressing" movie. Some people who have young loved ones (siblings, children, nieces/nephews, etc.) have found this movie literally impossible to watch if only for the worries it instills in them.
- Tear Jerker: It begins with Joel's diagnosis and only gets sadder from there.
