YMMV / Prehistoric Predators

They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:

  • The short-faced bear and dire wolf episode compares them with their smaller, once sympatric relatives the grizzly and gray wolf respectively, showing how the latter's smaller size and more generalized nature helped them survive the Quartimary extinction, but the Smilodon episode only draws comparisons with African lions, not with cougars or jaguars, smaller big cats that coexisted with Smilodon in the Americas during the Pleistocene. The jaguar, in particular, has quite a bit in common with Smilodon, being another exceptionally stocky big cat that evolved to hunt big game at the expense of speed.
  • Weirdly, the entelodont episode makes no mention of the hippo-like jaw-wrestling that American entelodonts are well-documented to have engaged in based on numerous skulls with bite marks made during intraspecific combat.
  • In the terror bird episode, the titular avians are the only predators shown to have lived in South America before the Great American Interchange. It would have been interesting to see sparassondonts like the saber-toothed Thylacosmilus or giant sebecid land crocodiles like the gigantic Barinasuchus be brought to life in the show. Thylacosmilus would have been a particularly interesting inclusion, given how Titanis later competed with a wholly different saber-toothed predator (Smilodon).
