• Captain Richards tells William that he's not asking him to be a spy but to merely travel to Dismal Town and deliver letters. However, a soldier going behind enemy lines in civilian clothes to pass communications from military command absolutely will be treated like a spy if caught. This is what got Major John Andre (British contact to Benedict Arnold) hanged in real life.
• When William asks Ian if he can speak English, Ian jokes that he's met plenty of English men that would say no. This calls to mind season 1's Garrison Commander when Dougal accompanies Claire to the British camp. The British commander insists on having everything Dougal says repeated by a translator even though Dougal is speaking English, not Gaelic. He doesn't give up the rouse until Dougal insults him and he doesn't want the translator to repeat it.
• In this episode, William is attacked by a snake and nearly loses his arm. Back in season 5, Jamie was bitten by a snake and nearly lost his leg.
• Ian gives William his rosary. Book readers will know that Jamie gave William his personal rosary as a parting gift at Helwater and the rosary becomes important later. However, the show chose to have Jamie give Willie a carved snake instead. Ian's gift can be seen as course correcting so that William has the correct Memento MacGuffin when the time comes for it to come into play.
• Part of the reason William keeps his face clean shaven is because, unlike the dark brunette hair of his scalp, his beard grows in an "unattractive" bright red...
