YMMV / Myst V: End of Ages

  • Annoying Video Game Helper: Some players see Esher as this, especially when he constantly interrupts the gameplay to talk about D'ni superiority to all other races. It became so bad that a patch was made to remove his cutscenes.
  • Creepy Cute: The piranha birds of Laki'ahn, which combing a goofy waddling gait and amusing sounds with huge jaws.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Escher's hut in Noloben, adapted from a building the Bahro made. There's a cage in it he uses to keep Bahro for gruesome experiments to find out things like their brain structure (he may well prevent them from linking away by utilising their fear of snakes). Knowing his hatred for them, they may have been alive while he did this. The cloth on his shoulder is similarly bad; he's able to link using it because it's a piece of Bahro skin.
  • Sequel Difficulty Drop: Far easier than most of the preceding game, especially the previous one. The inclusion of the slate mechanic heavily streamlines the puzzle possibilities, and it's also one of the shortest games in the series.
  • Tear Jerker: The intro. It leaves you with an uneasy mix of nostalgia and a sinking feeling before the game even begins. Atrus just sounds so tired.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: The developers opted to use 3D models for the characters in-game, fitting with the entire game's shift to 3D overall compared to the pre-rendered images and video capture of the previous entries. Sounds fine, but they still tried to get real actors in by superimposing their faces over the models. Ambitious for the time certainly, but the results can look more than a little off, and you can see their faces visibly warping every time the character's model looks off in any different direction, as if shifting the takes for various angles rather than one ongoing shot.
