• Ass Pull: The main murder is a bit far-fetched in its execution and the murderer's alibi relies on a contrivance, but what makes it all inexcusable is an assumption that Mrs. Leidner would just forget the appearance of the man she knew so well in her youth, even if he did grow a beard.
• Moral Event Horizon: Dr Leidner crosses it when he murders Miss Johnson, as he himself admits.
• Nightmare Fuel: Mrs Johnson is poisoned to death with a glass of hydrochloric acid. Her last moments were in horrific agony, and Dr Leidner, the murderer, admits it was a step too far.
