• Angst? What Angst?: The ending shows Marie and Michael reunited with their brother Thomas, healthy and happy as they play soccer with him in the yard. In real life, Elisabeth Fritzl’s children had a hard time adjusting to life outside of the basement they spent their whole lives in, which included panic attacks over minor triggers that took months to get under control.
• Harsher in Hindsight: Watching this with the knowledge that it is primarily based on the Fritzl case. This movie shows a more dramatized version of the truly horrorific events in the real case with Josef and Elisabeth Frtizl.
• Moral Event Horizon: Don crosses this line when he rapes Sara for the first time, showing the audience that there is no limit to the kind of abuse he is willing to inflict upon Sara.
• Retroactive Recognition: Marie is played by Emma Myers. The next year, Myers would have her big break as Enid Sinclair on Wednesday.
• Squick: Pretty much anytime Don is about to rape Sara.
