YMMV / Gekido

  • So Okay, It's Average: The general reception of Gekido Advance. The game's combat mechanics work well enough, but they are tarnished by level design that's nothing short of a Looney Tunes abomination. Stages are filled to the brim with offscreen traps that come out in a split second, so players will often get unfairly hit by a trap and tiptoe around to get past it only to land right onto another trap! Several enemy encounters are designed to damage the player on the first frame unless they happen to be in midair and due to errors multiple screen transitions damage the player even before control is enabled. The Updated Re-release not only didn't improve any of that but also added a roguelike mode with very poor area generation where at least one enemy type can still hit the protagonist between screens.
