YMMV / Bony

  • Fair for Its Day: In the same breath that he depicts Bony as having struggled against prejudice, and depicts Aboriginal traditional culture and abilities with skill and respect, Upfield has white characters fail to treat Bony with prejudice and unconsciously depicts blacks as inferior and their status in Australia (down to curfews, reservations and being outright banned from towns when not wearing white-man's clothes) as right and proper. One novel depicts a half-caste who is born white, raised "civilized," suddenly darkens as an adult and turns "wild." And back-handed compliments abound, such as stating that "tame" blacks lose their bad qualities and improve their good ones.
