YMMV / Bob's Burgers S9E19 "Long Time Listener, First Time Bob"

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: The episode's aesop, as shown in the main page, is "Trends come and go, but if you're really passionate about something and stick to your guns, eventually you'll find a loyal customer or fanbase who love what you have to offer and who will stick with you through the changing times". However, both Bob and Clem are instead depicted as openly stubborn people who clutch to doing things their way despite it clear that it is negatively affecting their lives. If anything, it does a better job showing their way of thinking is harmful and that a little compromise would be better than complete rejection. While Clem does get a DJ job again, it took 20 years and his audience will clearly be very limited given how long he had been off the radio and airing at very early hours few people will hear.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: The subplot revolves around Linda trying to get rid of sweet potato pies. And yet Marshmallow, a character who got her name because she loves sweet potato pies, is a no-show.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Bob's entire dislike of sweet potato fries because he thinks they're only "trendy" and his frustrations about not being able to succeed on his own strengths can get hard to sympathize with due to how over the top he is on the subject. He acts like a total Principles Zealot on the matter and rages at several different people, including Teddy, just because they express an interest in them. It reaches a point where it's less about Bob sticking to his guns and more he's acting like an unreasonable asshole over something so pedantic and unimportant. He also never stops to consider that the burger shops which made it onto that "Best" list might've succeeded for different reasons and the fact they all happen to serve sweet potato fries was just a coincidence. Bob's repeatedly demonstrated he's a great chef but also a horrible businessman, and he never once considers that could be the reason he never made the list.
    • Clem Clements is depicted as a struggling DJ who did things his way, but was thrown out in favor of something more modern. While the episode wants to depict him as a honest guy who doesn't give or take BS, he's instead seen as a stubborn man with no grasp on modern technology while also doing things that would genuinely be frowned upon, including non-radio friendly music. He dismisses Patrick's decision to stay as selling out, despite that Patrick needs money. In addition, he barricades the DJ room to hijack the radio, steals the company van and even toyed with the idea of setting it on fire. If anything, instead of getting a new job at a smaller station, he should have been blacklisted and arrested.
