YMMV / Avatar: The Last Airbender "The Day of Black Sun, Part 2"

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Qin reveal the location of Ozai's bunker out of cowardice, or was he in on Azula's gambit? Perhaps he was working with Azula, but genuinely was frightened at being caught by enemies alone and powerless.
  • Applicability: Though meant as a statement on imperialism in general, it's not difficult to read this line as a commentary on the US invasion of Iraq, still a recent memory when this episode aired. Just replace "The Fire Nation" with "America:"
Zuko: Growing up, we were taught that the Fire Nation was the greatest civilization in history, and somehow, the war was our way of sharing our greatness with the rest of the world. What an amazing lie that was. The people of the world are terrified by the Fire Nation. They don't see our greatness. They hate us! And we deserve it.
  • Spoiled by the Format: With half a season left and Aang yet to learn firebending (and the premise is that he has to learn all elements before the end of the series), it's obvious the Fire Lord would not be defeated just yet, let alone deal a decisive victory against the Fire Nation.
