YMMV / A Study in Scarlet

Go To

  • First Installment Wins: The "first few scenes" version holds true here. The first half is fairly famous. As for the second half, even many people who have read the book remember it hazily if at all.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Read here
  • It Was His Sled: For the first few chapters, Watson tries to solve the mystery of what his roommate's secretive occupation could possibly be. Yeah, by now pretty much everyone on earth knows what Sherlock Holmes does for a living.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Enoch Drebber and Joseph Strangerson respond to John and Lucy Ferrier fleeing their attempts at forcing Lucy to marry one of them by killing John and forcing Lucy to marry Drebber, leading to her Death by Despair.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Yes, the dog was old and frail and probably didn't have long left anyway...but Holmes still comes off as a callous bastard casually using the poor thing to test one of Hope's pills for poison. Particularly since the man Holmes deduces had died of the same poison bore an extremely distressed expression on his face, strongly (albeit wrongly) implying that the pills' toxin wasn't painless.
