Daniel is the 5th member of the Reservation Dogs who has already died when the series begins. The first episode takes place around the anniversary of his passing.In the 6th episode Hunting, we see several flashbacks when Daniel was alive. We are not told when the flashbacks are taking place in the timeline, but he appears to be bored with hunting with his uncle Leon and cousin Willie Jack, angry that they rarely get anything.

According to Willie Jack, he was the one who first talked about going to California and flashbacks in episode 6 show he is bored with the very little going on in The Rez. The gang may want to go to Cali to accomplish a goal or goals Daniel didn't live to complete on his own. It turns out, going to California was one of the last things Daniel said when he was alive.
The Reservation Dogs are seen gossiping with each other that they heard there was a new girl at school and she is from "the city," but did not know she was the rival gang leader until they were ambushed with paintballs. The only other information we learn about Jackie is she is living with her aunt and Willie Jack's Auntie B cuts Jackie's hair. Was she kicked out of the house and Sent Off to Work for Relatives?
In episode 6, Daniel tells his Uncle Leon he has come from a place called The Honky-Tonk with Elora. Elora had feelings for Daniel and her anger at wasting money and claiming the place killed Daniel are her feelings bubbling to the surface.
