The stars are pieces of life energy
Evan, Om-Nom's owner, is doing a science fair presentation on "remnant", or the energy of the soul. Om-Nom, being a telekinetic Cartoon Creature wit a sweet tooth, sees pieces of remnant drifting around in the form of stars and uses them to spice up the candies used as prizes for the box puzzles he goes through.
