  • Release Date Change: Initially set for a domestic theatrical release on October 9, 2020. The COVID-19 Pandemic-related closures of theaters prompted Warner Bros. to release it on their streaming service HBO Max on October 22, 2020 instead.
  • Troubled Production: Warner Bros. got hit with this big time when a crew member was stabbed in the neck, prompting a rumour that production might face suspension.
  • What Could Have Been: Guillermo del Toro initially planned to direct a stop-motion adaptation in the late 2000s which ultimately fell through; he is still involved with the project as a producer alongside Alfonso CuarĂ³n.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The film altered the appearance of the Witch's hands in this version. Each hand only has three fingers. Unfortunately, this look mirrors a real disability. And before too long, the internet was abuzz with criticism of the film by those with the condition and disability advocates. Warner Bros apologized, as did Anne Hathaway. It is this controversy that is thought to be the reason the film was pulled from HBO Max in 2022.
