• Deleted Scene:
  • Originally, the episode was supposed to end with Homer eating a pizza he inexplicably got (a Call-Back to the day he was born), but the writers didn't like the scene and wanted it to end on a heartwarming note. The pizza call-back scene can be seen on the deleted scenes reel in the season four DVD set.
  • Krusty originally mentioned that Sideshow Mel getting stuck in the cannon is just like what happened to another Sideshow sidekick he had named Sideshow Phil (who is stuck in the same cannon Sideshow Mel is in).
  • Also in the original airing, the phone number during Dr. Nick's commercial was originally for a real-life health clinic. Legal recourse made FOX change it into a fictional number for all subsequent airings (including syndicated reruns and home media releases, such as DVD and streaming).
• What Could Have Been: Originally, the surgery was supposed to be performed by Dr. Hibbert, but it was later changed to Homer having to settle for Dr. Nick because Dr. Hibbert's price was too high.
