• What Could Have Been:
  • In 1951, Tolkien began an elaborate retelling of the 1916 original tale, but it was abandoned after Tuor's arrival in Gondolin.
  • There is a retelling of the story in verse which was not included in the book for unknown reasons.
• Written-In Infirmity: Tolkien wrote the tale's original -and only complete- version when he was on sick-leave after surviving the Battle of Somme.
