• Playing Against Type: Of a sort. Doug Jones is a creature actor, arguably the leading creature actor in English-language film and TV at the time of the episode's original release in December 2020; in the majority of his big-budget leading roles, including Discovery, he appears under heavy makeup and prosthetics. In this and the remaining two episodes of the season, Saru's human disguise provides a pretext for Jones to appear essentially as himself.
• Working Title: This episode was initially called "The Citadel" before being changed shortly before release.
