• Enforced Method Acting: The tired, worn appearance of the cast isn't faked. The quarry where they filmed the episode was experiencing a record heat wave at the time, making everyone miserable. This was especially true for the actors playing the Jem'Hadar as it was so hot their makeup was melting, so it wasn't hard for them to act as aggressive as white-deprived Jem'Hadar.
• Real Life Writes the Plot:
  • Because Terry Farrell has a severe sunlight allergy, Jadzia was seriously injured at the beginning of the episode and spent most of her time in the cave.
  • Additionally, an extremely hot temperature and no light kept them from filming Worf's one scene in the episode. Though initially disappointed by that, production agrees the end they went with (Sisko's closeup) worked better given the episode's bittersweet tone.
• What Could Have Been: There was a scene in the script in which the Rotarran arrives and Worf beams down to find the crew burying Gordon and the Jem'Hadar.
