• Working Title: Angie Kim and her editor wanted to call the book Miracle Submarine, but changed it because some booksellers thought it was too weird.
• Write What You Know: Angie Kim moved as a preteen from Seoul to Baltimore and based many of Mary's experiences on her own. In fact, after Kim's mother read the book, she called her to apologize because she recognized herself and her daughter in Young and Mary. Also, Kim's four-year-old son underwent HBOT for neurological deafness in one ear and gastrointestinal problems that turned out to be caused by celiac disease; the chamber was a submarine-like tank painted aquamarine, just like the chamber in the book.
