• Approval of God: Ruth Rendell called the movie one of the few adaptations of her work that she was happy with.
• Career Resurrection: After his peak in the late '60s/early '70s, Chabrol was much less successful. This film did not exactly put him back on the map, as he still made Violette Nozière in 1978 and Story of Women in 1988 (both with Isabelle Huppert), but La Cérémonie was, and continues to be, considered on par with his biggest films.
