  • Breakthrough Hit: As mentioned on the Music page, this album quite fittingly propelled Coltrane into the mainstream.
  • Colbert Bump: The Vox Earworm video about the title track, "The Most Feared Song in Jazz, Explained," brought a lot of new listeners to this album, some 58 years after its first release... and then probably did so a second time after it won an Emmy Award a year later.
  • Enforced Method Acting: As also mentioned on the music page, Coltrane had a tradition of not showing his musicians the songs until shortly before they recorded them. This meant that their reactions to the songs would be fresh, but it also meant that they didn't know the songs too well. The reason it sounds like Tommy Flanagan is struggling to keep up with the title track is because, well, he is. It should be noted that Flanagan was a virtuoso pianist in his own right, but the chord changes are so complex that even a pianist of his skill level would have difficulty keeping up without enough time to master them.
