- Disowned Adaptation: The families of the astronauts all objected to the film's broadcast, as they had not been properly informed of its production or consulted beforehand. In particular, Jane Smith, wife of pilot Mike Smith, was deeply offended by the finale seemingly implying that he and the other astronauts died happily, claiming it trivialized and exploited the circumstances of her husband's death, while Lorna Onizuka said that the film made a mockery of her husband Ellison's life and the sacrifices he made for his country.
